Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - October 27, 1958, Mount Pleasant, Iowa The it. Pleasant news these Days by George e. Sokolsky what do they teach the British newspaper p n. Peace new publishes an essay written by a 16-year-old California school girl Kathryn Larson who received an a for the document at the Menlo Atherton High school in California. Miss Larson tells All that the world has changed drastically in the last half Century and Quot a Large amount of the wot id s land area and population has been swept under communism by Russia and threatens to destroy the freedoms and fundamentals upon which our governments Are based. The world has come to know and dread the horrors of the atomic and Hydrogen bombs Quot having reached this conclusion the Young lady proposes that we must prepare. I assumed up to that Point that she would say that we must prepare for War do something about it. But nay it does not come out that Way. This is what she wants us to prepare for a we must prepare for russian occupation of the United states by a major change of attitude of the american people. The plan must not involve violence but nonviolent organization a Strong National. Coordinated civil disobedience Campaign would be put into effective use. All official russian orders would be universally disobeyed. We would Emain Independent and invincible a o o o this is of course tripe and very ancient tripe. For if the russians can occupy the United states we shall be clearly finished As a nation. It would mean that most of our industries and our great cities have been destroyed by bombs and missiles. The Young lady does not at All in Haze that such a gandhian movement As she proposes would now be futile for 50,000.000 chinese could be transported to our country in such conveyances As Are available and in such times As it would Tak and they could do whatever work it would be necessary to do and la we wanted to live like Thoreau. In our own thoughts they would hash our Heads in As they do in their own country to their own people even now. This is no reflection upon any people it Only deals realistically with the horrors it being occupied. I have no idea How history the students at Menlo Atherton High school m California Are taught but it would be interesting to know when in time of War. An occupying army tolerated non resistance by the people of a conquered country surely miss Larson must know that India was never occupied by great Britain that the arrangements Between Indian prices and the British government were very different from what for instance exists in Hungary or Poland today. In fact. Gandhi who tinted his career As a lawyer in South Africa enjoyed when he came to India More rights to preach subversion and revolution and civil disobedience than would be tolerated in the United states or France today and that Nehru who had been a Bond Street dude in London and Krishna men an who ran for Public office in i Mon As any englishman might never faced what Cardinal minds Verity faces every Day of his life miss Larson age 16, High school student says a once properly launched a civil disobedience movement needs no Lead Ere. Each person would rely on his own strength the strength of his inner convictions. Word cited and deed would be one in every individual. We would be cautious not to inflict harm on the russian soldiers but show to them the strength and our Trust in. Our ways. Thus they could never conquer 0 9 0 this Young lady has of course never been in a War in which no prisoners Are taken because they Are too expensive to feed. She has in ver seen prisoners of War stuck on poles. She has never met human beings who Are brainwashed. Sin has read Quot Walden and has listened to someone called Roy Kepler and has reached conclusions concerning War and history. She was not at All shocked when she wrote the words Quot we must i prepaid a for russian occupation of the United states words which mean Retreat and surrender and death even at her Young age site expects this foul thing to happen and she is not indignant she would meet it by non resistance like Tolstoy walking a mooted in a russian Snow. And for such an essay of defeat miss Larson was Given an a by her teacher at the Menlo Atherton High school copyright 1958 King features Syndicate inc i vol. 80, no. 253 it.
