Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - November 24, 1970, Mount Pleasant, Iowa God we thank you for our food Jeffrey Hart our next major novelist d. Keith Mano still Way under 30, is quite certain to be a major novelist of the 1970?Ts and beyond. His first three novels were smashing critical successes a names like Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene were at hand when the reviewers reached for comparisons. Yet these famous names do not quite locate Mano. is very much his own kind of thing. His novels Are intensely contemporary and Deal with things like Black Power and counterinsurgency. Try his latest novel War is heaven. There can be no doubt a bout his hold upon the most present sort of reality. And yet pervading the whole thing almost miraculously is an older kind of sensibility altogether something reaching Back to the roots of the West. Mano is a great anomaly an artist and a Young artist who is a deeply traditional Christian and a Friend of America and the West. On a recent weekend Mano who is an avid football fan and who was a student of mine at Columbia came up to Hanover n. H., for the Columbia Dartmouth game he being a connoisseur of tragedy. But we had a marvelous weekend and on sunday afternoon plenty of time to talk about what he is doing As a novelist. I set Down some of his reflections. Q How did you get to be an orthodox and serious Christian were you one at Columbia i done to seem to recall that this bulked Large in your work there. A the initial thing the opening was my Sophomore course in contemporary civilization. I Wasny to religious at All. But the teacher would come to someone like St. Augustine and say something like a of course we can to bother about his religious views but let us consider him As a this struck me As absurd. Augustine was simultaneously a thinker and religious. I looked into his religion. Q How do you approach All this As a novelist at it seems to me i am different from most of the novelists i know. I feel that to write and speak out you have to say something valid something finally valid. I done to mean you have to be moralistic and preach sermons. It has to be there in the Story. But it cannot be just a Story. My problem is to show How the Christian deals with the modern world. My first novel deals with the Christian and Progress specifically medical Progress. Horn with Black Power. War is heaven with a Vietnam Type War. My fourth one with death and so on. Q what sort of statement does War is heaven make about a Vietnam sort of War you know that Many christians Are against the War on specifically Christian grounds. A probably what it says is that War As such is not that important to an understanding of god. You May ask a How can god condone War a the Book begins with the Story of Christ and the Blind Man. The disciples ask Why he is Blind. The answer is so god can show his Power through him. The Book says something like War concentrates the human condition makes Man face death immediately. But War is not fundamentally different from Ordinary life. In a Way it is a test situation. Death is real everywhere. But in War you done to pass q did no to you feel that Vietnam was a terribly risky subject for you to Deal with that Way a i know what you mean. But i chose it because the really Tough problem for the Christian today is that it is relatively easy to keep yourself pure by not involving yourself. You can say a get out of Vietnam let it not touch me my soul is but in War is heaven sergeant Hook sees that the ultimate selfishness is to refuse to defend a Man who is being killed because a i am too pure to do q How successful do you think you have been in getting these Points across a the reviews flabbergasted me. They loved the novel but they thought it was an anti War novel. The reviewers Are so geared to seeing the artist As anti War Liberal that its hard for them to see what i actually wrote. Q aside from misunderstanding have you found that there is any professional danger in being a no Liberal novelist a i thought there would be but give them credit there Hasni to been any trouble. My publishers have been upset by my christianity. La Bishop s Progress i have an evil character and when the publishers read the Book they said a look the the humpty dumpty pre school children spent the morning tuesday learning about thanksgiving not Only with stories about the pilgrims but also planning their thanksgiving Day dinners.
