The it. Pleasant news these Days i vo?~-80?Tno-272mt. Pleasant Iowa tuesday evening nov. 18, 1958 by George e. Sokolsky financiers and economists when it comes to a discussion of Money and Gold the economist thinks in Broad terms of the relationship of the total Economy of one nation to that of another and How that relationship might of feet the flow of goods and services and the Well being of Peoples. The financier cannot concern himself with so Broad a viewpoint. He is concerned with what the situation immediately Means to him As a business operation. Money in the United states is growing steadily cheaper As a Char j act Ristic of the inflation. Money is various things. It is a medium of Exchange. It is a receipt Lor goods and services it is a method of transferring wealth. It May have intrinsic value it it is supported by value it May have 110 intrinsic value if it is merely the product of a printing press. A government Bond is really ail equivalent of Money it is a Promise by a government to repay a loan with interest but 110 government issues such Bonds stipulating what kind of Money it will use to repay a loan. When a government is Strong and stable and its currency is secured by Gold it can usually borrow Money at reduced interest rates when a governments j economic condition is not too sound it must pay a higher interest rate. Such a rate As four per cent would be too High for the govern ment of the United states to pay. If a government in addition to a High interest rate has to pay a discount or provide a Premium its credit May be said to be bad. Government Bond therefore Are a better barometer than stocks As to the state of the nation. Stocks arc hardly a barometer at All. The experiences with inflation and with depressions indicate that very false conclusions can be drawn from the state of the Stock Market As Many people buy stocks because they believe that they Are a hedge against inflation also if a War is j in sight or an enormous budget is j prepared for defense purposes some financiers believe that whereas inflation May become spiral like a Tornado their equities May re-1 Mam stable if they Hae invested in War industries. They fail to ree Ognit two factors that the political economist can foresee one that in the event that War should come or the Economy should go out of hand political controls would have to be Stab i listed which would make their plans go awry secondly that it the Money of a nation is 110 Good it does not matter How much of it by Carrier 30# per week by mail vim per year rain and Strong winds strike Iowa accuse u.
