Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - November 4, 1958, Mount Pleasant, Iowa
The it. Pleasant news these Days by George e. Sokolsky the smear on Hoover the phenomenon of the current Effort to denounce j. Edgar Hoover of the Fri has Many interesting facades. First appears an entire Issue of a the nation a with an article by Fred j. Cook this article is mostly a journalistic rehash of material in a the Federal Bureau of investigation by Max Lowenthal published in 1950 and duly knocked off its pins by a the Fri Story a Don Whitehead and a masters of deceit by a Edgar Hoover. Cooke a additions to Lowenthal add Little. Cook s problem is made evident in his last chapter a the final he says a a. One conclusion however should be obvious to anyone who has gone to the trouble of trying to research the Day to Day newspaper files the Fri. Like any other human Agency is not perfect it makes mistakes sometimes serious ones. And because it does it should not be placed any More than any other human Agency should be placed upon such a Pinnacle that its actions its pronouncements. May not be questioned without the critic running the risk of being considered an enemy of the with this j Edgar Hoover would s Gree. But to criticize just to criticize is illogical and can be harmful. If the Fri exceeds its authority. Violates the Law impairs civil rights denies constitutional Protection of the individual let us go after it if Hoover is guilty of such conduct let us impeach him. But where is the evidence i have carefully read Lowenthal and i have carefully read Cook and i do not discover such evidence. These gentlemen might say that they Lack the facilities the Power of subpoena the authority to get at the facts. This is True. They do Lack such facilities. Nevertheless if their complaints Are justified they ought to be Able to make a better Case than they have made. Cook quotes Westbrook Pegler to the effect that the Fri has personnel scandals just As does the new York police department but the difference is that when a cop gets into trouble he makes a Page one headline when an Fri agent comes a Cropper he is quietly shelved or bounced by the Boss and nothing is Ever heard about it. I have not the slightest doubt but that this has occurred it Only establishes the competence of the Fri administration. Of course there Are failures in Fri personnel and. Of course they Are disciplined and some Are pushed out of the organization. It seems to bother Cook that the Fri has enjoyed favourable publicity in the newspapers and on radio. So have Scotland Yard the Royal Canadian mounted police and the Texas rangers some organizations Are More newsworthy than others some Are More colourful More exciting Cook is a reporter and he ought to know that. Somehow when a newspaper announces that the Fri is called into a Case the Public becomes More interested. Another complaint of Cooks is Quot Over the years Hoover has talked Tough about getting the big Slot racketeers and the Public and the press accepting these pronouncements have looked upon the Fri As the Nemesis of big time crime yet actually startlingly. The record shows that the real czars of the underworld. Accommodating gentlemen when it comes to bankrolling political machines rarely have been touched the Fri is a subordinate organization of limited Powers. It is a division of the department of Justice and take.-, its instructions from the attorney general. When it gathers the material for an indictment. It presents the material to the attorney general or an assistant who makes the decision whether the Case is to be brought before the grand jury or not. Some specific matters such As kidnapping have been delegated to the Fri by Congress. What Cook refers to in no manner comes under such a heading. If Hoover were to intervene in the Apalachin situation it would be a violation of states rights and of civil rights a and these must hold for a hoodlum As much As they do for Fred j. Cook. Now. I hear that a daily newspaper has a team of reporters scouring the world to discover weaknesses or perhaps wickedness in j. Edgar hoovers character. I heard from Paris that persons were questioned about j. Edgar Hoover i have had no such reports from Moscow. Perhaps they will discover a goldfish in a goldfish bowl.
