Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - May 7, 1970, Mount Pleasant, Iowa
The my pleasant news partly Cloudy vol. 92, no. 108mt. Pleasant Iowa thursday evening May 7, 1970 Price 10 cent Progress report on it. P. Schools by Sandra Williams this year of the census a time of accumulating facts and figures seems an appropriate time to consider some of the aspects of the 1960-70 growth of the it. Pleasant school system. Most of the following information has been gleaned from the superintendents Progress report of june 1969, with additional Progress and growth since that Date duly noted. In essence the report shows substantial growth in All areas of instruction curriculum materials and equipment and possible classroom space. However one Incontro Vertial fact remains. Further expansion and development is not possible without additional teaching and learning classroom space. Quot in preparation for future needs a broadened curriculum and the development of a More comprehensive program a according to the ten year report a serious consideration is and must be Given to further building student enrolment on july 1, 1959, the it. Pleasant Community school District became a reality. In sept. Of that year the enrolment was 1614 elementary and 585 High school students totalling 2199. At the Start of the 1969-70 school year the figures had increased to 1640 elementary 732 secondary and 42 special education. The increase included those students acquired through growth of the school District discontinuation of the parochial schools addition of special education classes and the City a population growth. Personnel ninety two teachers special teachers and administrative personnel attended to the needs of the student body in 1959. Because at that time there was a Large number of separate classrooms in separate locations throughout the District it was necessary to have some multiple classes under the supervision of individual teachers. By 1903 this situation was corrected and with the addition that year of Van Allen and Salem elementary schools the goal of one Grade per teacher was reached. Teacher training qualifications have changed during the ten year period showing a 13% increase in b. A. Degree holders 3.7% increase in . Degrees and a decrease of 16.7% in non degree holders. At present 117 teachers special teachers and administrative personnel Are employed by the it. Pleasant school District. Financial data an increase of slightly More than $200.00 per Pupil expenditures increased valuation for tax purposes of More than $10,000,000, a total budget increase of approximately $330,000, an increase of local property tax support of about $150,000, and a total millage increase of 3 579 _ these figures Are an important Factor in the ten year Progress report. On the other hand in 1959-60, the local taxpayer provided approximately 77 per cent of the general fund expenditures. During the 1938-69 the figure decreased to approximately 61 per cent due to increased state and Federal aids naturally costs have increased but additional staff added maintenance costs an increased transportation system and the gradual inflationary spiral account for the increase. Expansion and Progress do not come free As every businessman Farmer and housewife Are Well aware. Curriculum and in service in order to better serve the student studies have been started and changes made in several areas of the curriculum resulting in unification clarification and up dating of instructional areas. To this end also an extensive in service training program has been established furnishing the time and facilities for instruction of the teachers. In 1966 Donald Young was assigned the position of curriculum coordinator and director of Federal programs. In 1968 Roger Williams was assigned As curriculum coordinator for the secondary level. The curriculum of the English department was revised Grade 7-12 in 1965. The summer work of 1969 produced a revision in social studies curriculum and the 1970 summer work will Deal with study and re vision of the mathematics curriculum grades 7-12and science grades 1-12. Equipment through the general fund and funds provided by idea National defense education act instructional equipment has been added added throughout the ten year period As needed. A series of articles to follow will examine the various audio visual aids being used by teachers and students at All Grade Levels to implement classroom instruction As Well As providing records valuable for later study of some extra curricular activities. New texts have been purchased according to need because of Wear enlarged attendance outdated information and or altered curriculum. Building and Sites in 1959, fifteen separate buildings and Sites were being used for instructional purposes. As of 1963, the number was reduced to eight made possible by the addition of Van Allen and Salem elementary schools. The greatest change occurred at the 7th and 8th Grade level when students in six different locations were placed in a Central location resulting in a much desired unification of staff department ligation of instruction and coordination of program under one Central administrative head. At the High school level the former Dyall House was converted in 1961 to an Art dept., and the former Riviera building As of 1969, houses part of the English department. A relocatable classroom was erected near the High school in 1968 to provide classroom space for the special education classes four others were added the same year to elementary school facilities. The school bus garage completed in 1963, provides facilities for maintenance of a Fleet As of 1969 which numbers 29 buses and 15 cars. It is in this area of buildings and Sites that concentrated Effort is and must be now placed. Designed to accommodate 350 students when built in 1934, the original High school building is now fulfilling the instructional needs As Well As possible for approximately 725 students. The influx has been taken care of through the additions built in 1950 and 1957, plus the Dyall House the Riviera and a relocatable class room. In 1970-71, the existing facilities will be at 100 percent usage. That is every room will be in classroom use every hour of the school Day. The auditorium is used As music classroom and office every possible conversion of storage space into office or classroom space will have been made. There is no space for study work or lounge area for teachers students Are distributed throughout the buildings for study periods. As a result of the full capacity condition some classes have been necessarily limited to one Section each in some cases limiting the student enrolment in these classes to one third of those students desiring to take the class. In 1964, the state department of instruction figures indicated Henry county As second in the state at 51.9 per cent of High school graduates attending a four year College. It is increasingly obvious that More vocational areas need to be offered to non College bound students. It is obviously necessary that curriculum changes should be made areas broadened in All Fields to keep it. Pleasant students at the High level of achievement they currently display. However As this report stated earlier the school study made in 1968 by the Iowa Center for research indicates Quot further expansion and development is not possible without additional ask the students of Mph. They will Tell you that they do not suffer from Lack of concern variety of curriculum or excellence of instruction. They will Tell you of the Over crowded conditions which now exist which will become More pressing in the future.
