Pleasant Iowa wednesday evening june 3, 1970 Price to cents supervisor contest goes to convention Henry county republicans failed to select a nominee in the hotly contested four Way race for the Board of supervisors nomination in tuesdays primary and the selection will be made by delegates to the county Republican convention to be held on june 12. Candidate Cleo Johnston was High with 790 votes but this was 140 Short of the 35 per cent necessary for nomination. Johnston had Only four More votes than incumbent supervisor Clark Burns who had a total of 786 for second place. Carroll Crane was third with 615 votes and William r. Smith fourth with 465. Total some Veteran lawmakers / tossed out by up some Veteran lawmakers whose names have become As familiar As the Iowa legislature itself Are out of jobs today As a massive reapportionment plan and stiff primary opposition combined to insure a marked change in the 64th general Assembly. Among the most notable legislators to be Defeated in tuesdays primary were reps. Maurice Van Nostramo r Avoca James Caffey d Des Moines Tom Renda d Des Moines and William Hill r Marshalltown. On the Senate Side 18-year Veteran Ernest Kosek r Cedar rapids bowed to defeat at the hands of former sen. Tom Riley also of Cedar rapids. A it Van Nostrand who entered the primary fearing he had too much of an Urban image lost by about 650 votes to rep. Laverne Schroeder r Mcclelland. Both men had impressive legislative records but Van Nostrand was a highly regarded lawmaker and one of gov. Robert d. Rays chief liaisons. The Avoca Republican gained considerable publicity during the 1970 session for his sponsorship of vote of the four candidates was 2,656. Too in the Only other contest within the county Gary Wiegel was nominated for comity attorney Over incumbent James Morrison who had announced a few weeks before the election that he did not desire election to the office and asked voters not to vote for him. Wiegel received 1,755 votes and Morrison 794. Henry county Republican voters favored incumbent Richard l. Stephens for state senator Over Charles g. Mogged by 1,408 to i Iii. County Republican voters favored congressman Fred Schwengel Over David m. Stanley 1,520 to 1,234. In the uncontested nominations Arnold r. Lindeen received 2,418 for county treasurer Helen m. Virden 2,414 for county recorder and incumbent state representative Charles f. St Othman 1,500. Stroth Man was a candidate in Only part of the county in the new distracting and was a candidate in part of Jefferson county where he received 1,491 votes in eight precincts. In six North townships of Henry county incumbent state representative Herbert Campbell of Brighton was the candidate and received 675 votes. In Jefferson county he received 133 votes in five precincts. All of Washington county is in this District also. The Republican vote in Henry county for state candidates Allun opposed was Robert Ray governor 2,506 Roger w. Jepsen lieutenant governor 2,360 Melvin d. Syn Horst Secretary of state 2,342 Lloyd r. Smith auditor of state 2,312 Maurice e. Balinger treasurer of state 2,246 l. B. Liddy Secretary of agriculture 2,320 Richard c. Turner attorney general 2,254. To conduct drug abuse Survey in Iowa w Cedar Falls up a the social research Center at the University of Northern Iowa has received an affirmative nod from the governors office to conduct a drug abuse Survey in All of Iowa a 99 counties. The statewide Survey which is to begin immediately will be patterned after the Pilot study recently conducted in Cedar Falls. That study found that 9 per cent of those questioned were drug abusers. From 500 to 600 persons throughout the state will be involved in conducting the Survey which will be funded by either the Federal or state government or both. Paul Kramer director of the research Center and head of the Survey said the Survey has three parts it will conduct tests to determine How knowledgeable students Are concerning drugs and their usage it will attempt to determine the nature and event of drug abuse in Iowa and the Survey will develop a personal and social profile of the drug abuser in Iowa.
