Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - January 17, 1970, Mount Pleasant, Iowa The it pleasant news vol. 92, no. 14 it. Pleasant Iowa saturday evening january 17, 1970 Price to Cento these Days by John Chamberlain Nixon woos the Young president Nixon has an unerring instinct for covering his flanks. He has been told that he does no to need the negro vote a but still he works away at a program for giving Aid via government orders to factories run by Black capitalists. He has been told that there is no Point in playing up to the Young the argument being that the College population is statistically negligible on any Given election Day. But he would like to have Young people on his Side if Only to keep them there when they grow older and he has been doing something about this too. One of the Nixon moves has been to make Stephen Hess a White House aide the National chairman of a White House conference on children and youth. Since the Washington meetings of this conference Are still some distance in the future there will be one to consider the problems of pre adolescent children in december of 1970, and another for the age 14-25 category in june of 1971not much can be said at this Date about the probable Impact of whatever ideas or. Hess is working up. But or. Hess plans to do preliminary work with regional conferences. And one proposition already accepted Chimes in with the Nixon for handedness in taking the wind from his opponents sails. Ralph Nader scored a coup for the left when he recruited his a a Nader a raiders from the Law schools to go in and investigate the Workings of Federal agencies during the past two Summers. Next summer the Nixon administration will be ready with its own a summer internet program with students coming to Washington to study the operations of government. Too conservatives were somewhat flummoxed when Nixon sat Down the other Day in the White House with members of the Ripon society to talk about youth problems. The conversation went on for an hour. Since the Ripon Young people who belong to the Republican Liberal left Are greatly outnumbered in the party by members of such organizations As the Young republicans and Young americans for Freedom the question of partiality was raised by conservative critics. The conservatives have a Point Here the members of Yak far More than anyone connected with Ripon have upheld the president on the Issue of the Vietnam War and they have a right to resent a Brushoff. But there is the question of activism to be faced after All the Ripo nites had the gumption to go to the White House with their suggestions which included one for a television panel in which the president would talk Over youth problems with a Young audience and Nixon is always one to respond to an activist prod. If the other Side wants to see him they know How to go about it. Just work up a program and ask an audience. Too the Ripon society has been guilty of supporting some most in Republican republicans in local elections and it never did love or. Nixon before he managed to snatch the nomination away from such Ripon favourites As Nelson Rockefeller and John Lindsay. But some of the ideas which the Ripo nites stressed in their White House meeting with the president have the support of Young americans for Freedom. The Ripo nites urged Nixon to move As quickly As possible toward substituting a Volunteer army for the hated and obnoxious draft which is something the Yak would ask of Nixon too. If the Ripon society represents the left among the Young Republican voters it is More and More ceasing to be a left in the new Deal sense. Actually some strange and heartening words Are coming from Ripon sources. Josiah Lee Auspitz the president of the society commends Peter Drucker for urging the a Are privatization of Many activities that Are now undertaken by the Federal government. And he attacks the a Liberal intelligentsia for their opposition to decentralization. A already a he says a one sees that reforms like tax sharing with the states a Volunteer army the replacement of social Security and a voucher plan for education must overcome enormous initial hostility from the intellectual leadership of the a new class a the academicians and journalists who cling to a statist if those words had come from Barry Coldwater or or. Milton Friedman i have been Sui prised. But coming from a rip onite i am amazed. And i might add highly encouraged by the evidence survivor of crash transferred to . Harris Gene deck 25, it.
