The i pleasant news fair vol. 92, no. 9mt. Pleasant Iowa monday evening january 12, 1970 Price to cent interim Board reports on cutback in religion faculty the following report by the interim administrative Board of Iowa Wesleyan relative to the discontinuance of the services of Bruce Birch and Frank Wright on the faculty after the close of the current College year is Given in full Here with the exception of condensation of certain paragraphs giving in detail the courses in which students were enrolled. The request by faculty members for a full explanation of the situation regarding Bruce Birch and Frank Wright the Resolution passed by the constituent Assembly of the student body and the newspaper publicity Given to these events require that a full statement be made. For the past decade the department of religion and philosophy has been a two Man department with occasional part time help. Majors have been prepared on a rotating sequence of courses students have entered graduate school and theological Seminary or prepared for other forms of Christian service. One heavy concentration of work was the course religion 101, 102, old and new testament which was required of All students for graduation and Drew an annual enrolment of about 190 students. In the Spring of 1968, the new departmental requirements for the Wesleyan plan revealed that Only a Small number of departments would require religion 101, 102 for graduation in the future. It was obvious that within the next two years As upperclassmen finished these requirements that the enrolment in this course would drop drastically. In the Spring of 1908, former president Franklin h. Litten appointed to the faculty of the department of religion and philosophy or. Bruce Birch a specialist in old testament and hebraic studies. He did not consult at this time with the head of the department of religion and philosophy Abou. The need for this appointment and he did not seem to be aware of the fact that the enrolment in religion 101, 102 was about to be curtailed under the Wesleyan plan. When or. Birch arrived on the Campus in september 1968 he had not As yet been assigned any courses to teach. A Hasty meeting of the department of religion and philosophy was held with the chairman of the division presiding since the 1968-1009 head of the department or Theodore Khan was hospitalized for surgery. Or. Birch was assigned two sections of religion 101 and accepted an additional assignment to assist in teaching history 173, world history. This made a full fall semester teaching Load of 9 hours. For interim i he was assigned religion 222, seminar in religious drama and for interim ii he was Given the supervision of some special projects in the department. For the Spring semester two new courses religion 312, archaeology and the near East and religion 497, readings in hebrew were introduced into the curriculum for or. Birch to teach and he was Given the responsibility of setting up the office and program for plenary 400, responsible social involvement to provide a full time assignment. For the year 1939-1970 four new courses were introduced into the curriculum to provide or. Birch with teaching assignments religion 332, Judaism religion 365, advanced old testament religion 66, advanced new testament religion 375, theology and contemporary literature. The last course was to be taught together with a member of the department of English speech and drama. The enrolment pattern for or. Birches courses follows fall 1068 a 37, 26 interim i 1969 a 7 interim ii 1969 a 5 Spring 1969 a 8, 4 fall 1969 a 44, 5, 5, 2 Spring 1910 a prospective 9, 7, la. Too or. Frank Wright joined the staff of Iowa Wesleyan College in 1967 1968 As an assistant to president Litten with a part time teaching assignment in the depart of religion and philosophy. In the fall of 1968, or. Litten informed the department of religion and philosophy that he had changed his office set up and that or. Wright was to be assigned a Fuller teaching Load in the department to be combined with administrative work As director of the Freedom Institute. During 1968-1969, or. Wright taught a total of 12 hours one half of a full time teaching Load and for 1969-1970 he was assigned 15 hours slightly More than a one half teaching Load. He was however to be paid a full time teaching salary with an additional supplement for his work As director of the Freedom Institute. The enrolment pattern for or. Wrights courses follows fall 1968 a 4 Spring 1969 a 9, 5 fail 1969 a 8, 6 Spring 1970 a prospective 5, 6 too it would appear that or. Birches teaching is in very highly specialized areas for which there was a Small student response. The record would not seem to Bear out the Resolution passed by the constituent Assembly of the student body on 1/8/70 that without these courses a the department of religion would be it would appear that or.
