Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - January 7, 1970, Mount Pleasant, Iowa The it pleasant news vol. 92, no. 5mt. Pleasant Iowa wednesday evening january 7, 1970 Price to cent these Days by John Chamberlain the town that saved its Art Center Basel Switzerland you think you Are just going to the museum to look at paintings and you run into a Story of voluntary Community action that would shame hundreds of american towns that wont make a move to do anything for themselves about supporting Art without Aid from a state capital or from Washington. The Basel Art museum in the Center of this City on the great northward Bend of the Rhine where Switzerland France and West Germany meet is famous for two things its collection of classic Holbein and its room devoted to the Many faceted Pablo Picasso. For years the museum gloried in two of the More famous Early a a representational Picasso a the two Brothers a a Beautiful painting dated 1905 of a boy carrying his younger brother on his Back and a the sitting harlequin a done in 1923 when Picasso still maintained his interest in strolling players and circus Folk. Along with other paintings the Picasso were on a sort of permanent loan from the wealthy Stachelin family. The family had a Trust arrangement under which no member could sell any of its Art treasures without getting permission of the rest. So it looked As though Basel would enjoy the Picasso forever. Too unfortunately As the Story is told by Basel Art aficionados one of the More venturesome stache Lins was engaged in a charter air line business. He had a couple of cig planes which took parties to Kenya for game safaris to the Balearic islands and to the Orient. One of his planes was involved in a bad crash and the charter air business turned sour. Even before the crash the creditors were closing in and the air line was in dire need of Cash. The Stachelin family listening to the pleas of its straitened member voted permission to sell the Picasso. The louvre and american museums were reportedly interested. Basel s Art lovers were properly stunned when they heard what the Stachelin were asking for the Picasso. The figure was 8 5 million francs or some two million dollars. The museum authorities making extravagant demands on their patrons who included some of the big local chemical companies managed to get together six million francs. But there the drive sputtered out. Too the Story now turns to the Basel Community. Swiss artists painted special pictures and auctioned them off at High prices for the a Picasso City officials took turns As waiters in the restaurants and donated their tips. The Basel soccer club raised Money at benefits. One Man charged big sums to let people ride his ancient High wheel bicycle. And the children sold cookies cakes and Candy up and Down the streets. The whole Campaign As it is recalled by citizens with a taste for Homeric Story telling was Over in time to meet a two and one half week deadline with the necessary 2.5 million francs in hand. The foreign museums might have upped the Ante but the Stachelin impressed with the spirit of their town called off the bidding and told the museum they could have the Picasso.
