The i pleasant news fair vol. 92, no. 36mt. Pleasant Iowa thursday evening february 12, 1970 Price 10 cent these Days by John Chamberlain Are we being too Tough on pesticides senator de Muskie of Maine and senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin both democrats Are hoping to ride to glory on the anti pollution Issue. But president Richard Nixon is bound that he a and the Republican party along with him a will get there first. This is the sort of political Competition that must help More than it can possibly Hurt. And whether the democrats or the republicans run off with the credit hardly matters. How a politically pleasant it would be to swim again in the lakes or Rivers of ones youth or to take the Winter Sun in Southern California without battling smog on ones Way in and out of los Angeles or to eat shellfish picked up on a Long Island sound Beach. The politician that can Lead the american people i i a successful crusade to clean up the environment will surely Merit support on a non partisan basis. Ones personal feeling of Elan about the coming Battle for a decontaminated world however is a Little dashed when one has ones nose rubbed in the scientific complexity of some of the choices that lie ahead of us. Do we actually know where the balance lies when it comes to applying pesticides for example Dot is supposedly bad for certain species of Birds at any rate. But it is also bad for disease bearing mosquitoes and flies and Many crop eating insects. O o o the Federal government listening to the clamor has decided in favor of the Birds which Means that the mosquitoes Are going get a reprieve too. But now a most unusual warning comes from a Friend of mine Robert Sullivan of Sherlund Forest penn., who is in the business of growing Christmas Trees. He says that Complete elimination of Dot could mean the end of Christmas Trees As we know them. The reason is that since the growing abandonment of Dot the Gypsy Moth is on the move again. It has teen infesting progressively larger Forest areas of new England new York new Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania and has been moving into Canada and Virginia. John a. Koch president of the Pennsylvania Christmas tree growers association tells of one Large isolated Patch of Trees in Centre county Pennsylvania that has been completely denuded of foliage. In it the Case of deciduous Trees the stripping of the leaves is not immediately fatal though growth is naturally stopped while the tree Waits for a new springtime suit of greenery. Deciduous Trees can stand some punishment but not too much. With conifers however death invariably follows a first Complete defoliation. O o o once before in our history we stood to lose much of the tree cover of northeastern american. The Gypsy Moth imported to the . In 1869 for silk experiments Only to turn into a pest was brought under control by arsenate sprays. But arsenate had such dangerously High toxicity that they had to be banned and the Gypsy Moth started to come Back. Trees were being decimated again in new England until As a result of Dot applications after world War ii the Gypsy Moth was reduced to one Small Colony. Or. Koch and or. Sullivan do not profess to be ecologists. And neither of them wants to witness the a silent Spring that Rachel Carson predicted if pesticides were to kill off the Birds. But unless we can come up a it the a Good substitute for Dot we May get a a silent Spring anyway. As or. Koch puts it a i wonder what All the Birds and the bees will be doing when there Arentt any leaves on any of the Trees a o o o or. Koch and or. Sullivan since they raise tree crops might be accused of making self serving statements. But Hardin b. Jones a professor of medical physics and physiology at the University of California in Berkeley who has no Christmas tree investment to defend thinks that Dot is a a remarkable compound which has done More than any other chemical to make the world comfortable and to increase the food of All the pesticides says professor Jones a Dot is the safest. At High Levels it is destroyed rapidly by body tissues at Low Levels it is metabolically inactive and harmless simply dissolved in body fat. The use of organic pesticides was a significant step of improvement because theretofore Many foods were contain ated with arsenic and Lead containing pesticides which probably did have a detrimental effect on professor Hardin Jones is wary of fighter bombers hit i again in Cambodia Saigon up a american fighter bombers have struck again into Cambodia this time against gun positions that shot Down a u.
