Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - February 4, 1970, Mount Pleasant, Iowa The it pleasant news partly Cloudy Section one 2 sections vol. 92, no. 29mt. Pleasant Iowa wednesday evening february 4, 1970 Price to cents these Days by John Chamberlain the 1970 crusade against moral monsters when Barry Coldwater running for president in 1964, started talking bout crime in the streets he thought he had a Good Issue. But he was just four years ahead of his time. Today As the candidates for office in 1970 begin their campaigns there is a race to pre empt the tag of being the most unequivocal enemy in any Given District City or state of the moral monsters who seem to be swarming Over the land. And As the campaigns warm up the unthinkable will be thought the inadmissible will be admitted and the unspeakable will be spoken. Mafia characters will be dragged out into the cold Light of Day the police will Start going after vandals timid school superintendents will do More than admit to themselves that they have a terrifying drug problem on their hands and parents who have been trying alone to Cope with troubles with their rebellious offspring will find themselves attending mass meetings to consider their predicament. Too in new York state there has been a virtual conspiracy of silence about drug addiction in the schools. If democratic mayoral candidate Mario Procaccino or Republican John Marchi had really gone to town on this subject last fall they might have succeeded in bouncing mayor John Lindsay out of new Yorkus City Hall. Suddenly coming from nowhere the name of state Assembly speaker Perry b. Duryea. A Republican from the Montauk end of Long Island is being mentioned wherever the politicos Are talking about possible candidates for governor if by any Chance Nelson Rockefeller should move on to Washington As say Secretary of state. One of the reasons for Duryea a sudden emergence As a big figure in his party is his willingness to face up to the drug Issue. He is convinced he says that in his Home Community some eighty per cent of the High school students have experimented with marijuana. Duryea wants special legislation to cover the treatment of school age drug addicts. Too in Connecticut it was being generally said a year ago that u. S. Senator Tom Todd who had been censured by his colleagues for alleged misuse of Campaign funds would have Little Chance for renomination let alone reelection in 1970. But Dodd who was recently cleared by the internal Revenue service of charges of income tax violation has seized the Issue of violence in the schools As a prime Issue and As chairman of a Senate subcommittee on juvenile delinquency he is in a better position than any of his rivals to go gunning for moral monsters in newspaper headlines and on to. Dodd has been telling the citizens of the Connecticut state capital of Hartford that their local school Bill for vandalism and burglaries in the academic year of 1963-69 came to $170,000. To soothe any ruffled regional sensibilities Dodd also Points out that Chicago a problems Are worse than Hartford a. Between 1964 and 1968 the reported assaults on Chicago teachers jumped from around a Hundred to More than a thousand. Dodds presumed opponents for the senatorial nomination a state Senate majority Leader de Marcus and the reverend Joseph Duffy head of americans for democratic action a would assuredly concede nothing to Dodd in this matter of deploring juvenile violence and narcotics addiction. But the Point is that Dodd can beat them to the punch we Hen it comes to giving chapter and verse taken from the hearings of his own Washington subcommittee. The very fact that the children of big time politicos have been victimized by drug pushers is bound to make the crusade against moral monsters a popular Issue for anyone who can prove that he has been a Pioneer in combating the spread of juvenile crime. When a newly elected new Jersey governor a major candidate for the democratic gubernatorial nomination in California a new York state democratic aspirant to succeed to governor Rockefeller a Job in Albany and a Hartford Connecticut City manager All have to confront the fact that their own offspring have been arrested for drug Possession it pretty Well defines what is bound to be Issue number one for the coming election year.
