Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - August 18, 1970, Mount Pleasant, Iowa
The it pleasant news partly Cloudy Section one 2 sections vol 92, no. 194 it. Pleasant Iowa tuesday evening August 18, 1970 Price to cents these Days by John Chamberlain the year of the Independent candidate the election patterns for the autumn Are taking on a great similarity to Virginia new York and Connecticut. In All three of these Eastern Seaboard states we will see a Strong Independent senatorial candidate contesting the Field against the traditional democratic and Republican nominees. In Virginia the Independent happens to be sex Democrat Harry Byrd a conservative who is favored by the polls to defeat Liberal Democrat George Rawlings and Liberal Republican Ray Garland. In new York the conservative party a Jim Buckley who is campaigning As a a Nixon Many against Liberal Republican Charles Goodell and Liberal Democrat Richard Ottinger has a Chance of winning if the left splits its vote evenly Between the other candidates. And in Connecticut the incumbent p. S. Senator Tom Dodd a former Democrat running this year on his own has suddenly had a boost because of the Way the Republican senatorial primary turned out. Dodd though a traditional Liber-?a1 when it comes to we Farist measures is setting himself up in Connecticut As the strongest pro Nixon senatorial candidate on u. S. Foreign policy. For All practical purposes he is the Jim Buckley or the Harry Byrd of his state. He got a Lucky break last week when u. S. Representative Lowell Weite or Defeated state senator John Lupton for the Republican u. S. Senatorial nod. Lupton had campaigned As a a Nixon Weicker. The Republican organization Choice resented Lupton a attempt to push him into an anti Nixon Comer but it remains True that weickers opinions on foreign affairs have not always gone along with those of the White House. Too on such things As the Cooper churl amendment and Cambodia weickers position Hasni to differed very markedly from the position of Connecticut a Liberal democrats. All of this might be neither Here nor there if Lupton had not made a surprisingly Good showing against Weicker in the primary. Where . Representative Thomas Meskill a conservative who happened to be the organization Choice for governor of Connecticut won by a big margin in the primary against state minority Leader Wallace Barnes the vote was 93,000 to 38,-000weicker Defeated Lupton by the much smaller vote of 76,000 to 60,000. This would seem to indicate that a Good Many republicans that will vote for Meskill for governor in november May be in a mood to desert to Tom Dodd on the foreign policy Issue when they pull the senatorial lever. Too Dodds chances of winning Arentt quite so Good As Jim Buckley a in new York state and he lacks the organizational strength that Harry Byrd the inheritor of his fathers a Byrd machine regulars can count on in Virginia. But he has enough Appeal to cause both Weicker the Republican and the democrats to a run speaking in percentage terms there probably Arentt so Many All out conservatives in Connecticut As there Are in Virginia or new York. Nevertheless the far from negligible right Wing vote in Connecticut which feels strongly on the anti communist Issue will be tempted to vote for Dodd simply because he has been the u. S. Senate Leader in opposing russian imperialism for years. In addition Dodd has his strength among the a a ethnics of Connecticut who have captive nations backgrounds a the poles the czechs the hungarians. And he has a solid Trade Union base in the a hard hat Section of Connecticut labor. Some of this vote might have gone to John Lupton it is virtually certain that it will weigh the Choice Between Dodd and Weicker and the democratic nominee before making a final decision. I too Dodds main drawbacks Are financial. Ironically he is at a disadvantage in trying to raise gift Money whether through testimonial dinners or appeals for donations because of the censure voted by the u. S. Senate for his use of testimonial Money in the past. Dodd claims he has been vindicated on the gift Money Issue by the u. S. Internal Revenue service which found no tax irregularities after a Long investigation of his finances. Nevertheless the whole business remains an embarrassment when it comes to asking for Money support this time. Escort vessels opened the sea valves of an old Liberty ship the is Lebaron Russell Briggs which was used As the coffin for the . Special safeguards were taken to allay fears of some that the intern pressure of the three mile Ocean depth might rupture the Concrete containers and let Loose the lethal in a sudden burst or cause the rockets inside to explode. Army authorities insisted that even if that happened there would be no danger to human life. Too the water samples obtained in bottles will be taken to a naval Laboratory at May orc fla., for a Check after the disposal is completed. During court hearings at which it successfully defended its disposal plan against efforts to Block it the army said there would be More danger from allowing the deteriorating and unstable rockets in tile coffins to remain above ground. Reports on id use of fluids Des Moines up a a state audit released today showed the Iowa development commission spent More than $891,000 in Federal funds for various Urban planning activities in the state. One major area of expenditure the audit said was agriculture promotion. Two private firms and Iowa state University received a combined total of $106,934 for promotion activities. The audit recommended some minor changes in bookkeeping and record procedures but found no major faults with the commissions operation. Ingenious ideas will very probably be the next u. S. Senator from Connecticut. But Dodd can make it an interesting autumn in new York state and in Virginia. Distributed by King features Syndicate to spot Check 5000 buses Washington up a transportation Secretary John a. You May pin my medal on the right above the one i should have for the same Deal last summer. Done to get me wrong. Ifs not that in a not the outdoor athletic Type. I think All sports Are Fine. I enjoy Many on to in my air conditioned House. The outdoors is a grand and Lovely spot especially when viewed from inside. I even believe in communing with nature As Long As i can get my Flowers from a Florist. So it Isnit True i am anti outdoorsy. In a not anti vacation either. I love weekends in Chicago and was very taken by the grand hotel on Mackinac Island this summer. Of course i Wasny to staying there merely bicycling by with one of the twins on the Back of my tandem Bike As my aching legs protested. However the Lovely Plaza and Pool grand veranda and uniformed footmen stick in my mind As my kind of vacation. Unfortunately i have four men in my family and they think camping is a a cools. It is that Okay like 40 degrees when you drag your aching Bones out of a steeping bag to face a Daybreak breakfast. Too the excuses i get of economic necessity and a healthy for the lads Quot thinly disguise the real reason we Camp i think. My mate has often claimed he would have loved the a going West with the covered wagons bit. I gladly admit id have stayed in the East until he had a Home built minus wilderness and hostile indians. He a a Pioneer out of his proper time that a the truth of it. If he had thousands to spend on vacation i firmly believe head spend it on camping equipment and stay out longer. Our boys Are captivated by the adventuresome trips. They like their dad scoff at running water electricity trailers with air conditioning Etc. They tolerate with thinly veiled contempt and absolutely no sympathy their mothers fears of snakes bugs and the wild beasts of the Forest. The four of them listen politely shake their Heads hand me a flashlight for the trips Down the Trail a and plan a longer trip next year. Too in a still remembering things from this trip. We had an Inch of water inside one end of the tent As the rain poured and Thunder crashed. A Lovely family from Ontario learning of our plans for next summer offered sincere Well intentioned advice concerning a living agreeably with the i shivered and Shook one morning fixing breakfast dressed in pyjamas sweatshirt Slacks sweater and jacket. As i Shook there thinking unlovely thoughts my family raved about a food tasting better we Laid out wet towels and Damp pillows on the car Hood to dry in the Sun White we ate lunch with the Mosquito each noon. Then each evening we unpacked still Damp towels and pillows to place in our still Damp tent. When people say a a there a nothing like camping a i definitely agree. Every morning but one. We met some very Nice families and visited interesting and Beautiful places in Michigan and Wisconsin. Trying to be a one of the Guys i too scoffed at trailers with stereo speakers on the roofs the electric coffeepots on picnic tables Lawn chairs and air conditioners. It really Wasny to bad but done to Tell my family. It would ruin All their fun. Too my problem now is to gently convince my troops that White i very much appreciate our Roomy borrowed tent i would dearly love to be off the hard cold ground. I also have to learn not to drool with envy As i pass luxurious trailers with heat electricity water and Beds. I will learn not to wish to strangle those misguided souls who smite happily and warn me of bears and 30 degree mornings. I plan cheerfully ? to acquire Long underwear anti Bear Spray and a better attitude. The War is Over the Battle won and i face Many years of camping i fear. I Hope to see the Day i can imitate a lady in our final Camp this year. As we pulled out with Damp pillows scratching the newest bites i saw a vase filled with ferns and win Nowers on a table by a tent. I Hope that a a sign of Happy acceptance. Deep Down however i can to help wondering if my unknown colleague was exhibiting signs of cracking situation discussed at National level Washington up a agriculture department experts held a closed meeting today to assess potential damage from a blight epidemic that has ravaged thousands of acres of com in the nation. Reporters were allowed in at the Start of the meeting but after about half an hour they were asked to leave As a result of instructions from agriculture Secretary Clifford m. Hardin. Hardin is said to be concerned because the blight problem had caused Sharp gyrations on Grain markets. Too called Southern com blight the disease is caused by a new virulent Strain of a previously minor organism. It has caused severe damage to Southern com Fields and has spread to Northern Corn Belt Fields As far North As Minnesota. Before the meeting of 25 officials was closed to reporters a Plant specialist said the Over All damage potential is a very difficult to assess because no one could Tell yet How severe damage will be in the main Corn Belt. George f. Sprague the specialist said experts in Southeastern states believed probable losses there might reach 30 to 40 per cent. New proposal for w. Burlington Road the Lith sign of the Zodiac is aquarius the water Carrier. Seriously though the kids pitched in to help and were happily Grubby. My husband who can to boil water at Home fixed breakfast Ames up a if the City of West Burlington does not agree with the Iowa Highway commissions latest proposal in constructing a freeway the state May have to the total amount of the freeway. If this is the Case the state probably will not construct the freeway according to the Way West Burlington would like to have it done. The commission said today that when West Burlington receives the latest proposal the City will have two weeks to concur or the state will build the Road As they see fit. This was the latest decision made in a Long standing hassle which started in december 1964 when the commission adopted a five year program outlining first phases of the Burlington freeway. Too agreements on the major Points have been reached with Burlington but there has been an almost total Lack of concurrence with the state and the City of West Burlington. The major Contention is the proposed locations of interchanges. The commission has submitted their latest proposal to the Federal Highway administration formerly Bureau of Public roads and based on the reply from the Federal Agency the commission will propose the following to West Burlington. The commission will build an overpass at either Ramsey or Broadway Street which Ever West Burlington prefers providing the which could consume another year or two if Federal participation is to be maintained in the project. Too Gunderson said if the City balks at the latest plan the commission proposes to build the freeway without any overpass at either Ramsey or Broadway. He also said if the state pays the entire Cost the commission would place an overpass Only at gear ave., with no provisions for the addition of an interchange later.
