Mount Pleasant News (Newspaper) - April 27, 1970, Mount Pleasant, Iowa The it pleasant news a no. 99 it. Pleasant Iowa monday evening april 27, 1970 Price to cents these Days by John Chamberlain a futile Case against Justice Douglas what Are we to do about supreme court Justice William o. Douglas in Many ways he a a pain in the Nock. He lets his agent sell his articles to magazines which though a they May be legally Safe from prosecution under the present interpretations of the obscenity Laws Are the quintessence of bad taste. He took a $12,000-<a-year salary As president of a foundation which so the accusation runs was financed with Money derived from Las vegas gambling casinos. And he has recently published a Book a Points of rebellion a which indicts the a a establishment As the a new George the implication being that revolution May be required to get rid of the tyrant unless he a or it a can be brought to see the error of his a or its a ways. In spite of his lapses or his sins or whatever else you want to Call them Bill Douglas has not put himself outside the Law. So Tho ground for impeaching him which is what rep. Gerald Ford a Mich wants to do is a very Flimsy one. Impeachment proceedings against the Justice would certainly fail in the . Senate even though an indictment might conceivably be sustained in the House. Too As a matter of consistency i done to see How conservatives who were outraged by the Senate a treatment of the Haynsworth and Carswell supreme court nominations can now seek revenge by impeaching Douglas. The Senate had no justifiable Case against either Haynsworth or Carswell. It was nver proved that Haynsworth had let his Stock possessions influence is opinions As a lower court Justice nor was it proved that Carswell Vas a he had repudiated his salad Day utterance on the subject of White supremacy and his momentary connection with an All White Golf club was just about As reliable an Index to racial feelings As senator Burch Bayh s membership in the All White benevolent and protective order of elks. Too having waged the Good though unsuccessful fight against the a a Liberal senators in the Haynsworth and Carswell cases How can the conservatives reverse themselves and Call for the impeachment of Douglas there is no proof that Douglas knew anything about any alleged taint that might have been connected with Parvin foundation funding. As for the nude pictures published in the magazines to which he has contributed they can hardly have been much Nuder than the ones found in the so called respectable mass magazines. Playboy and Evergreen May have set the Pace but the a respectable so have Long s Nee caught up with the naughty pacemakers. For that matter a raft of respectable Public servants have had their articles printed in Playboy. The indictment against Douglas for not taking his literary product off a tasteless Market could be brought with equal propriety against practically anybody now writing for any Magazine that pays More than two cents a word. We Are simply living in a generally debased age. There is no reason to take it out on Douglas because his articles happen to have appeared next to Girlie Shock pictures that have Long since lost their Shock value. Too the Point about Douglass alleged co donation of revolution is a somewhat More serious one than the charges that he was the beneficiary of foundation Money from ultimately Shady sources or that he Bas contributed serious prose to unserious publications. But the Justice could take Refuge in the argument that he was not necessarily speaking As an advocate when he said that revolution is the indicated answer to tyranny when a else fails. Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln said much the same thing and nobody has Ever impugned their patriotism. Douglass notion that the current a establishment a whatever that May happen to be is the a new George Iii is of course a prime piece of stupidity. But if occasional stupidity in social analysis were a reason for impeachment what supreme court Justice in recent years would be immune the Senate majority was wrong absolutely wrong about Haynsworth and Carswell. It would be just As wrong if it impeached Douglas on any grounds offered to Date if Douglas resigned like Fortas before him it would do much to Clear the air. But he wont be impeached and Gerald Ford is Only helping to fan dissension by bringing the matter up. Note warning after blast in Louisiana Baton Rouge la.
