It begins in the Early 1900s and travels through the great depression world warn an Oil Boom and decline plus a Brief excursion into politics. There have been Romance and Hope loss and disappointment Joy and a pleasant retirement. It will soon be 83 years since this son of an Illinois state legislator and grandson of a Register editor began his sojourn. He was bom june 21, 1907, a to Rene and Amy Lee Snyder Havill of it. Carmel one of two children. He was named after his Grandfather Frank w. Havill who was the it. Carmel Register editor in 1877. When he was about 9 years old his family lived for a time in Springfield where his father worked in the office of the Secretary of state. Rene Havill also served two terms As a state legislator and one term As senator. Young Frank resumed in time to graduate from Mtcarmel High school in 1925. He ran track and then ran Cross country in a Model to Ford with two classmates. Quot we wanted to visit All of the colleges a Stanford and All of them Quot he said. They did a using up 33 tires in the process and making a Sid trip to Tijuana. The Young graduates returned to it. Carmel shortly after Christmas and Havill enrolled in Mckendree College and later the University of Illinois. Quot then the depression came and knocked the tar out of everything Quot he recalls. Havill resumed to Wabash county where he worked for a time with the county Surveyor and then was named superintendent for spa projects As president Roosevelt attempted to turn the nation around. An Engineer s daughter it was while working on a spa project that he met the daughter of a Railroad Engineer Ruth Denise Roberts. The Roberts family came from Indianapolis where mrs. Roberts was once pictured in a local newspaper holding baby Denise just after casting the first vote by a woman in the state of Indiana. Frank and Denise were married in 1938 and five Days after Havill s birthday they will celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary. The years continued counting and 1941 arrived plunging the world into conflict. Soon Havill volunteered to join the War Effort and was stationed at fort Leonard Wood mo., where he trained As a Quot combat he saw action in the Quot european Africa theater Quot and was engaged in the final invasion of Germany. It $150 a month and 6 cents a mile was pretty Good Havill was honorable discharged nov. 14, 1945, and resumed to it. Carmel and a new chapter in his life. He began arranging Oil leases eventually working with several local Oil companies and travelling All Over the Midwest including Michigan Kentucky Ohio and Texas. For several years he worked As a broker for Amax Coal company but most of the time he worked for himself. On two separate occasions he was asked to fill out unexpired terms a one created by a resignation the other by a tragic death. After each term Havill refused to seek re election.
