Pat Jet four the Democrat thurs., nov. 24, .1921. Tile Cylc Veail Ojei Llodrat find profit in creating such nuisances Russell Lindsly editor and reason readers of the billboard should _ be annoyed by Reading and i sickened by writ oyed by Reading entered at the Post office at Smethport pa., As ing about them at length. Second class matter Smethport pa., thursday november 24, 1921. Editorial this morning ushered in another thanksgiving Day and verily the american people have great cause to give thanks for the blessings that Are ours. Not Only is there a pronounced trend towards Normal economic conditions but the coming year holds Forth every Promise of bring ing unprecedented Prosperity to this nation. Greater than All these blessings however and for which he entire world has cause for thanks giving is the splendid Progress being made at the world conference to limit armaments in Washington. The Broad scope of the plan submitted by Secretary Hughes took the conference lit off its feet As it practically amounted to an agreement for naval disarmament and no one dreamed of any plan being suggested even approaching that scope. There is no question but that Secretary Hughes who was unreservedly for the league of nations is one National Leader who is determined to keep Faith with the boys rho wore the uniform in his efforts to give them what they fought for Over seas world peace founded on the magnificent principles enunciated by former president Wilson. His naval proposal was a bold stroke a Brilliant achievement of diplomacy and it came at the Correct a school i tical moment to accomplish results. Arthur Balfour in a wonderful speech which will live in history acting for great Britian accepted the Hughes proposal and was followed by the representatives of France Italy and Japan. Thus More was accomplished in the opening hours of the conference than had been looked for in Sev eral weeks of. Negotiating. The War weary nations Are wisely arriving at the conclusion that War is unnecessary. The Man who sa4ys that it is an impossibility for nations to dwell together in peace is correctly set Down for a fool. A notable Case to prove that it has always been possible for nations to live in peace is the hundreds of Miles of Border Between the United Canada faithfully protected but Only by an agreement which was arrived at when the relations Between America and Britian could not be described As most cordial. Then there is the of the original thir Pach with different racial Indus characteristics but All consecrated to one that federation has developed into the great United of America and in doing so passed thro ugh a baptism of blood and fire the civil War which did not destroy but rather tempered and strengthened the Bonds of federation. Now the nations of the Earth have arrived at the conclusion that they can dwell together in peace. If they really desire peace and there is not a doubt in the world that they do peace we will have. The time has arrived when the great Powers in a federation founded on Noble principles will guide the world s destinies and guide them peace fully. For this thanksgiving. We have devout cause for sickened by writ i hereby announce myself As one worm who has definitely to the splendid sentiments enunciated by or. James the decent Public will Echo amen and no doubt the gauge of Battle thus thrown Down will be endorsed by decent actors and actresses who Are but servants of Public whim who will come to a realization that this class of stage productions do not reflect the desires of really Worth while class of theater goers the and will steer shy of engagements of this kind which must be revolting to them even above the necessity of earning an existence in their profess Ion. The writer Felt downright ashamed for a Lead ing citizen the other Clay who displayed Complete ignorance of one of the most important Public topics in our town history. This knowledge the c. Lacked could have been supplied him by any Small taxpayer of the town or any school child for every phase of the Public question had been followed completely to length and clearly by the local newspapers. The Humble citizen the Salt of the Earth and his Bright eyed children Are interested in civic affairs and keep abreast of the times by Reading their local newspaper even though leading citizens sometimes do not. A leading influential citizen above All oth ers is looked to for counsel. He is expected to keep abreast of the times in fact ahead of them. He must be a consistent Reader and generally subscribes to a number of National publications which he reads intelligently yet in Many instances he ignores his Home town paper with the re sult that a school boy is better equipped than he to give intelligent advice on local questions. Wonder How Many leading citizens there Are in sme Liport who do not read their local newspapers we wonder How much this class of Citi Zens contribute to the failure of a any communities to move Forward in fact to Retro Gress the Man who does t care enough for his own town newspaper to read it does not care very much for his neighbors and even less for his own town. He Don t care for anything and any counsel he has the audacity to offer on civic questions could be naught but evil and should be he is not a Good citizen to say nothing of his posing As an advisor on momentous affairs. Inspiration is a wonderful thing. It is responsible for All. The great accomplishments of the decline of the american stage of late years might Well be classed As appalling. Seemingly the Only theatrical productions that have paid financial returns to satisfy the managers Are the supine licentious downright immoral specie of so called bedroom comedies. The class of managers who Are responsible for the numerous productions of this calibre claim that the Public demands this class of entertainment. Be that As it May the stage was free from this class of trash and retained High esteem for centuries be fore the production business fell into evil hands. It would seem that a clean up of the stage was in by the Public but by actors them selves. That clean up will come when the actors who taken As a body Are the cleanest living profession on Earth assert their self respect and refuse to appear in such productions. It is re freshing to note that the movement in that direction has already started. Patterson James whose Brilliant unprejudiced and important criticisms of new new York theatrical productions Are a Bright department of the Cincinati Bill Board is one Man who has taken up the Cudgel against the bedroom farce. As he is one of the country s Foremost dramatic critics whose opinions carry tremendous weight among people of the theatrical profession the stand he has taken Means much. Or. James under the caption the worm has says a stomach provoked to nausea a brain dead ened to Shock ears deafened from listening to filth and stupidity and eyes aching from the sight of unlovely scenes bad acting and vulgar Ity compel me to announce that in future plays Jike getting Gertie s the Demi Vir civilization in every Fiel d of Endeavor history science Commerce Art business and Industry. Seldom comes unaided. Perhaps it is actual assistance physical or financial or maybe no More moral encouragement and kind words of a Friend which spark of inspiration in the Genius still encouragement of some kind has been absolutely necessary in nearly every instance history records to bring out the Best in those who have accomplished things. Had it not been for the encouragement of Queen Isabella Columbus would not have discovered America. Had it not been for the Loving inspiration of his beloved wife the Beautiful lines from the pen of Edgar Allen Poe would not have been penned. He wrote in a frenzy to provide the necessities of life and even then died before his Genius became generally recognized. Had it not been for the interest in Abraham Lincoln of Horace Greeley and the presentation of the great emancipator s name before the Republican convention of 1860, at the precise moment by the Gree by forces America would have been deprived of the services of one of the world s greatest men. Sometimes Genius has to travel a Long ways for inspiration. John Masefield perhaps the great est poet of recent years for a number of years struggled in new York City earning his existence by acting As bouncer in a bowery Sal Oon. He found no sympathy or understanding to encourage him to literary Endeavor. He drifted to England when Well along in years and found encouragement there which led to the Many Beautiful compositions from his pen which have charmed the literary world. A few years ago the literary highbrow of America succeeded in prevailing upon or. Masefield to return to America and lecture on his own verse. They were quite pained to learn that he was origin ally an american and was compelled to go abroad to develop his literary Genius. The writer had the pleasure of meeting Masefield in Mississippi on the occasion of his last visit to the United states before his death. These Are september 2, 1921 announcement or. Eisel b.
