At last a sensible Street improvement plan the Democrat congratulates the Smethport Borough coun cil on the sensible plan it is about to carry out for the improve ment of main Street through the business District to improve parking facilities and to expedite moving traffic. The program Calls for a cutting Down of the High sidewalks on the North Side of main Street for sufficient clearance Back of the curb line so that doors and fenders of cars parked along the Street will in future escape the mutilation which is daily inflicted on motor cars under the present condition of affairs. The plan Calls further for a widening of the Street by narrow ing the sidewalks on the South Side of the thoroughfare by Sev eral feet. This arrangement will permit Diagonal parking lines on the South Side of main Street and parallel parking As at present on the North Side. J this will greatly increase our present parking facilities in the business District and at the same time improve moving traffic conditions. All business men know that greatly increased parking facilities and improved traffic conditions Means better business for any town in these Days when Mankind travels in motor cars. Furthermore the Cost of this decidedly progressive Street improvement program will not be Large and if the Council should decide to permit the Borough to Avail itself of Federal Aid Money the Cost to local taxpayers would be insignificant As the program will be mostly hand work. But that is a matter which rests with the discretion and wis Dom of the Council. The Only suggestion that this writer sees that might be offered for further improvement of this splendid program would be or the sidewalks on the North Side of main Street to be Nar rowed several feet same As those on the South Side to permit Evert a further widening of the Roadway Over the specifications of the present plan. A few feet Width of sidewalk on either Side of the Street will suffice for All pedestrian needs but the paved Roadway can continued on Page four column one repair damage at tile factory indicates better prospects Fob closed Clermont Plant a construction program is now in Progress at the Clay tile factory at Clermont this county which conveys a lint of an encouraging future Outlook for that big Industry.
