Mass Media, The (Newspaper) - November 19, 1968, Boston, Massachusetts Page MASS MEDIA November OUR OPINION Sacred Cod and not so Sacred Students The theft of the famous 200yr old Mass Sacred Cod created a furor in the State House last Thursday The 10foot long symbol of Boston fishing industry was removed from the ceiling of the visitors gallery in the House of Representatives A reliable spokesman at UMB who wishes to remain anonymous informed the Media that a specific group of students was responsible for the theft The students have purloined the symbol to protest the arbitrariness of the decision to place UMB at Columbia Point The spokesman announced that the group has no plans to keep the fish and intimated that it will be returned before January The student group phoned all Boston newspapers on Friday night and informed them that UMB students responsible The students informed the news sources that they removed the cod at Thursday during the welfare mothers demonstration One student revealed to the Media We are offended that the legislators spend between 6 million and 8 million on our college in Boston yet there are not 5 of these legislators who have ever cared to visit our The student also mentioned that taking the cod is a protest over the Columbia Point Police and officials scouring Boston and its environs to locate the fish and its thieves The Media knows who the thieves are and feels that they are indulging in the childishness which has marked all their ventures this year D NOTICE UMass Boston has been invited by the Finance Association of office still located on the 4th Floor Main Building AND OUR READERS Dear Editor Ordinarily I enjoy Mr OConnors articles but the twist in Video Highlights is a bit too twisted The political ad showing Vice President Humphrey laughing it up in between scenes of suffering and despair was intended to disparage Humphreys socalled politics of hope theme In spite of how I feel about either Nixon old or new I would expect that this was the intent Unfortunately the absence of dialogue left the ad open to interpretation and under the circumstances it could only be uncomplimentary That one evening was the only time the ad was presented The Nixon people withdrew it explaining the intenf behind it To be kind Ill dismiss Mr OConnor as being a cynic However anyone who could assume that Humphrey or anyone else would exploit a mentally retarded child for the sake of a vote is deserving of severer judgement I dont find dehumanizing Nixon and Humphrey nor do I find that kind of news article entertaining Further for Mr OConnors edification there were two political conventions in August The leisure in their usual useless manner picketed the wrong convention made themselves public nuisances and got just what they expected to get and then some They boosted Nixon into the White That film deserved to be stashed Those phonies got all the equal time theyre entitled to Unfortunately VicePresident Humphrey and those of us who supported him were stashed too I used to think of Mr OConnor as a scamp but as he continues to write he gets more like a buzzard Heres hoping one of his future victims turns out to be a taxidermal buff M Cummings 70 To the Editor The most recent meeting of the Student Council shows more than ever before the determination of Mr George Weidenfeller that the Bowling Club of UMB is not to attain RSO status A motion that the statement of Purpose of the Club should be changed to add to sponsor the TenPin Bowling League of This seems to be a perfectly legitimate amendment but Mr Weidenfeller ruled the amendment out of order on the grounds that a TenPin Bowling League does not legally exist at UMB BALONEY If there is no TenPin League at UMB then what has been bowling every week on Tuesday evening at And under the name of the UMB TenPin Bowling League at that Obviously Mr Weidenfeller is out of order or out of his mind if he honestly feels that there is no tenpin league in existence at this university If not then what can he possibly use as an excuse that would rule the amendment out of order Ill tell you whathe does not feel that the members of the League are worthy of having anything done for them on the floor of the Council So what if they passed the Constitution for the Club The UCSA for all intents and purposes rejected it at their last meeting So where is the League after years almost of its existence Nowhere thats where At the start of last year Finnegan said that we should incur no problems whatever in trying to get but today we are not as yet an RSO thus we are without funds which we need in order to fulfill our stated purpose Mr Weidenfeller if you would really like to see the UMB Bowling Club become an RSO then dont let your personal thoughts prevent this from happening If you dont feel that a TepPin Bowling League exists at UMB then take a walk over to the State Street Bank and Trust Company and ask them about our Bank Account which we just opened on the date of this letter October 30 Take that walk only if you really want to represent the students of your class who are in the League who voted you into office Take that walk if you have the strength to walk that far Take that walk if you really want to find out if there is a real UMB TenPin Bowling League in existence But if you are as brilliant as you seem to be and dont want to find out the truth then dont take that walk Dont take the walk and remain as ignorant of the truth as you are today Sincerely Don E Leeman President v UMB TenPin
