Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - September 30, 1950, Mason City, Iowa Sept JftMR Clljr GlbtGMetU Malta City U CHAPTER 28 PERRYS feminine instinct was to rush out of the room and to the privacy of her own to fling herself face down across the bed and cry her eyes out But her ingrained knowledge of her duty as a nurse restrained her After all her duty to her patient came first And so she drew a long hard breath and straightened her hands clenched tightly m the capacious pockets of her tailored robe Its my fault Mr Ellender and I acknowledge it freely sh laid at last her voice straine until it was almost harsh Dr McKenzie told me the first day came here I was too young am too immature for this job He wa quite right I was young enough to fall in love with him and tha made a fool out of me and I made a mess of things for you and Sanna and for myself as well Bu as soon as Dr Litton replaces me with another nurse Ill go away and things can settle down again If youll let me help you back to your you need rest ly Philips smile was warm friend Td like to stay here awhile with Sanna he said gently Oh I know she probably wont wake up for several hours but Id just like to sit here quietlyHayden wDl help me when Im ready youre the one who needs rest Run along do Because it was so obvious that he really meant it she could do nothing but obey At the door she dismissed the servants and as they went uncertainly away Cook eyed the closed door behind which Philip sat beside his unconscious wife Well so its going to come out all right after all said Cook Praise be the good Lord Ive never seen two people as much in love as the master and the mis tress It fair did your heart good to see em together I never right ly understood about the accident but I always knew the mistress wasnt to blame Perry could not answer her and Cook smiled at her and said Now dont you worry none miss The servants all heard the whole thing but they wont talk They dont have much to do with the mountain folk anyway and theyve all been with Mr Philip for years This is our house and our family and were a close mouthed lot I promise you Perry thanked her smiling a little with tears in her eyes and Cook lumbered down the stairs after the others Hayden who had come in some time after the others lingered and Perry said You must be terribly tired Hay den Not at all miss It doesnt take much sleep to do me and Im so happy this night about the master and the mistress that I wouldnt sleep even if I went to bed You get your rest miss and Ill have a nap tomorrow while youre with the master answered Hayden warmly Safe in her own room at last with the door closed behind her Perry huddled across the bed her face muffled against the pillow Now that she was free to give way to tears there were no tears to shed because everything was over and done with and she would be leaving here very soon and she would never see Jay McKenzie again And that was a thought so bitter so desolate that it was be yond the release of tears The next morning she had set tled Philip for the day when Dr McKenzie arrived accompanied by a tall spare man with thick graying hair and keen blue eyes behind thicklensed glasses A man in his late forties with the tired lines in his face that were al most the trademark of an over worked doctor Litton Philip greeted him and shook hands There was an odd almost shamed look in his eyes as they went on to Dr Mc Kenzies inscrutable dark face Good of you to take over now that Jays abandoning me Thats something Ill never un derstand said Dr Litton with brutal frankness Hes been com pletely devoted to your case for so long and reports that you are regaining a partial use of your limbs I should think youd hang on to him with grappling hooks if it was necessary to keep him I would said Philip very quietly and there was a pleading look in his eyes as they tried to hold Dr McKenzies dark gaze Unfortunately nothing Ive been able to say has managed to change his mind Im leaving Pineville said Dr McKenzie curtly Ive always wanted to specialize This looks like a good chance to begin He began explaining the case to Dr Litton and Perry stood by alert composed helpful When it was over and Dr Litton had studieo the charts intently and seemed to have the case thorough ly in hand they went out into the hal and Dr McKenzie motioned to Perry to follow them Youll find Miss Kimbro thor oughly competent Dr Litton Dr McKenzie began formally but Perry interrupted Im sorry doctor I havent had a chence until now to tell you that I am resigning from the case as soon as I can be replaced said Perry crisply Dr McKenzies eyebrows drew together in a little frown This is the first Ive heard of it A rather sudden decision wasnt it he demanded She met his eyes straightly and said Not too sudden I am plan ning to enlist in the Army Nurse Corps and ask for overseas duty Ive always wanted to travel Dr McKenzie blinked and Dr Litton said fussily Look you two fight this out Im due at the hospital for a tonsillectomy in 30 minutes Ill see you later Jay They were silent until the outer door closed behind him and then Dr McKenzie said sharply Whats all this about joining the Army Its something Ive thought about a lot she told him coolly You wont like it Ill be useful Nurses are needed here home A welltrained practical nurse would be entirely adequate for a lob like this It doesnt require a trained nurse she reminded him He stood frowning at her for a moment and then he made a little gesture of dismissal and his eyes Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF crossroads the eyes hostile Well my dear began Dr Mc ienzie heartily Skip it ordered Sanna hus ily Lets drop the bedside I understand you saved life last night and you may s well know right now that I dont appreciate it a bit Perrys eyes flashed but Dr cKenzie grinned as he drew up chair and sat down beside the bed his fingers on her pulse I dont expect you to not right away he assured her quite un disturbed by her hostility People only attempt suicide when of un sound mind and they feel pretty upset until their minds come back to normal Sanna turned her head restless ly on the pillow The time I was of unsound mind was when I married Phil and thought it would work she said grimly I was fool enough to think that because I loved him so much and wanted so terribly to make him happy that was
