Press Staff Corespondent Washington UR The ladies who edit the womens pages of this nations newspapers slowly are doing me in Yes you are la dies The meat shortage by itself I can stand Wan am I from a diet of baked cucumbers and fricaseed eggplant weak from eatingrutabagas a la Rockefeller compote of boiled cel ery and similar foods hitherto consumed mostly by rabbits That is bad my beautiful editorial friends but why must you add to my agony The newspapers by the dozens and the scores Do I read about the democrats denouncing the republicans for the empty butcher shops Or viceversa No ladies I do not I dont even glance at the funnies Some strange perverse power some unnatural psychological urge forces me to thumb rapidly to the womens pages and there torture myself reading recipes for good things to eat I have in front of me now causing me to drool and feel dizzy in the solar plexus a recipe culled from the current issue of one of Americas great newspapers How to make meal balls For a family of 9 Take 10 pounds of pork and veal mixed and chopped add par sley garlic 4 eggs pepper and salt 1 cup of cracker meal and Editors in skirts you are killingme I do not mean with Algona Iowa which will provide class room space for 400 veterans The federal works agency an nounced Friday that the buildings were to be transferred to the Lu ther college The agency said sur plus WHdrool Monday SMALL PREDICTS LABOR SHORTAGE Sees Necessity for Longer Work Week Washington was warned Saturday it faces a short age of labor by the end of the year O longer work week at over time pay will be necessary if we are to get a substantial increase in overall production said John D Small civilian production ad ministrator Small told a news conference the labor pool has been exhausted Therewill soon be a shortage of labor clear across the board he added Greater productivity per man is the answer he asserted That means more output per hour and more hours worked per week Generally he said productivity is already above prewar levels In a monthly production re port small said August output of most consumer tires washing machines radios stoves vacuum cleaners had passed the prewar records This was not true of cars re frigerators or sewing machines But the car makers built 241000 vehicles in AugustSmall reported and expect to pat out 1000000 in in the next three months By the end of the year he pre dicted many of the relatively few remaining shortages will vanish On the great mass of goods shortages are already a thing of the past As these shortages are worked off our
