that the basement which was vlded into two small connected rooms contained high test gas hi one of the compartments and a small stove used for heating water In the other No definite evidence uncovered CONTINUED FROM PAGE j resent a year of effort toward a definite objective Frankly I woiildnt be much interested in the fair If it were not for this side of Mr Nollwhospecializes in cattle on his farm four miles south of Spencerwas asked to explain why the Clay county fair had grown to sectional dimensions while fairs in many other places were experienc ing difficulty in eking out an ex istence They All Own It Really he began Ive won dered about that same thing my self and I cant say But he went right ahead andDID in something this manner Weve tried from the start to have everybody in town and country Feet that he was a stockholder m aie project thathe owned a part of it and that its sucaeSBwould be HIS success And I guess thats just what Everybody is a booster andeverybody is a worker Thelittle presidentof the asso ilation who is serving bis fifth erm let it be known that it was no one man proposition Couldnt Be Dona by One couldnt be headded for it las grown to such dimensions that no one person could handle the job and even make a pretense at run ning his own business In this connection he explained iat the work is departmentized and in charge of each department a qualified individual has almost ab solute authority Each department head be con inued becomes a specialist in bis i field andthe rest of us stand by and let him be hisown boss Mr Nolls principal interest it seems is in the and girls work and it is doubtful if any de velopment in the history of the fair association has brot him as much personal satisfaction as the comple tion and inauguration into use this year of the large building for this work In addition to the large sec tions for tbe overcrowded is an arenalike pavilion where the stock Is brot for exhibition and sale It was Mr Noll who interested the large packing companies in com ing here to bid onthe baby beeves the conclusion of the fair j Record of Steady Growth A visit to the Spencer fair cannot help but bring out a too plentiful use of superlatives Each year since its inception a dozen years ago has seen a in plant and in the exhibits This year hundreds of head of livestock were turned awav for lack of space despite the fact that awnings and every other nook and corner were brot Into use to provide additional stall room The writer spent an hour and a half walking down thru the dif ferent barns and he felt that to do the job properly at all at least three times as much time would have been required Two Fast Harness Races Thursdays program in front of tbe grandstand was built about two fast harness races and a running race participated in by nonprofes sional riders and local horses The vaudeville program included fouc acts featured by a group of trained dogs The Winter Garden review which played at the North Iowa fair in Mason City supplied the maior part of the night show Music thru out the fair was by the Karl King band from Fort Dodge The Morris and Castle company which recently occupied the mid way at the Iowa Minnesota and South Dakota state fairs pulled stakes late Friday and left for Ok lahoma City This left an obvious vacancy on tbe midway but dozens of concessions had remained for the final flicker of the fair tonight If we can get by in the face of chilliness such as weve had this week observed Leo C Dailey the secretary it certainly should give us confidence that our fair is so stable that its life does not depend on the whims of weather Thats just it The Clay county fair has become an institution Helen Platt girls athletic direct or has announced that the tennis tournament Sept Germanys new mystery warship 10000 ton craft mounting 3ix 11 inch guns and capable of a wide cruising radius at high speed destined to play an im portant part in anyfuture naval limitation conference that deals with capital lighting ships In thejudgment of some Ameri can navalofficers this would be especially soif there should be a move in 1936 to abolish the battle ship as has been suggested unof ficially in recent months since the of the present Anglo American negotiations for limiting the tonnage of auxiliary fleet craft Without Limitation With Germany possessing six ships of the characteristics of tha onenow completed it is argued in naval circles that the other aea powers would be unable to dp with their own capital ship fleets without changes in the agreement which fixes eight inches as the limit of the bore of guns to be mounted on other than battle ships Under the terms of the of Versailles Germany is permitted to build six ships of 10000 standard tons or about 12500 tons displace ment without limitation of uny kind as to the size of the guns that might be mounted on them Has Made Advance At the time the treaty was neg otiated and even at the time of the Washington arms conference in 1921 the general naval thot of the world apparently was that an eight inch gun was about the largest that could be placed on 10000 ton ships without sacrificing speed cruising radius and defensive ar mor While comparatively little is known about the new German craft by the other navies it is the Ger manclaim that its new design is entirely practical If such is the case it has made a bigadvance in warship design and one that may make the nation a factor in future capital ship limitation conferences Were Highly Effective The s be 11 inch guns of the Ger man craft are mounted In three ar mored turrets two forward and one aft Admittedly this ship would be far superior to the 10000 ton 8 inch craft of the Am erican and British navies and to all practical purposes it is a capital ship aris MJS A WPUY these stockings in Paris asked Customs officer as he went through trunks at pier Gold Stripe Chiffons and I got them right in my home correctly heeled smartly
