without a secretary general and no procedure for succession to the office A move was reported to post pone the opening of the 16th regular session of the General Assembly scheduled for Tues day for three days to sort out the confusion that approached chaos It was expected that the Se curity Council which recom mends candidates for the sec retary generals office for elec tion by the General Assembly would quickly be called into session Some diplomats pre dicted that it might meet Tues day There was little doubt that Hammarskjolds death played into the hands of the Soviet Un ion and its satellites which have been demanding replace ment of the oneman secretary generals office with a three member vetowielding troika arrangement W i t h Hammarksjolds re moval from the scene the So viet Union undoubtedly would move fast to try to pull over its proposal Chakravarthi V Narasimhan of India an undersecretary for special political affairs was named by Hammarskjold on June 12 as his chef by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council When the term of the first UN secretarygeneral Try gve Lie ofiyNorway was about to expire in February 1951 the Security Council was un able to agree upon a suc cessor and Lie was given an informal threeyear extension of his tenure Lie resigned under Russian pressure because of his op position to recognition of Communist China past year mainly because of his policy on the Congo where Soviet infiltration attempts were frustrated by the UN operation An editorial North Iowa welcomes Methodists plan to erect home for the retired DECISION TO ESTABLISH a home for the retired in Mason City is being enthusiastically received by our com munity The announcement was made Saturday by Dr Clarence H Pettersen superintendent of this district of the Methodist Church The project will be meaningful for North Iowa in a number of ways Fore most of course is that it will meet the needs of a sizable number of senior cit izens whose great preference is to spend their sunset years in the locality where they have lived their lives While the size of the home has not been fixed there is an assumption by those close to the planning that the first unit will provide accommodations from 100 to 150 residents What Fort Dodge now has in its Friendship Haven could well be a preview of the project here The local home will be the fourth modeled somewhat after Fort Dodge in Northern Iowa One is in operation at Storm Lake another under construc tion in Cedar Rapids Southern Iowa has two in being Des Moines and a third being built At lanta When the Mason City h6me is com pleted and given a suitable our community and those who take up resi dence in it will be in the debt of a con siderable number of persons who have gone beyond the call of duty in turning dream into reality Some of these including former Gov Robert D Blue president of the governing board have been named But one credit has been notably the anonymous donor of This generosity will be a standard and guide for others no doubt It will be a hard secret to keep Planners of the project have sought the cpoperation and counsel of a group of Mason City civic leaders including our mayor These things will be forth coming in full measure it goes without saying A special welcome awaits the Rev 0 W Brand Forest City whose ap pointment as executive director of the home has been announced by Bishop F Gerald Ensley From his new resi dence in Mason City he will begin his duties Oct 1 In the makeup of the board of trus tees is an unmistakable reminder that the home here is to serve an extended area in this part of the state Points as distant as Oelwein Spencer Fort Dodge and Des Moines have representa tion Another point brought out in Satur days announcement is that residency in this Mason City home is not going to be restricted to Methodists This same policy of course prevails in Iowas four homes now serving our senior cit izens It should be noted however that there will be heavy emphasis on creat ing and maintaining a Christian atmos phere In all ways there will be an ef fort to simulate the loving spirit and the comforts of the homes from which the residents come Dag is crash victim Sought end to fighting NDOLA Northern Rho desia UP Rhodesian offi cials reported that Dag Hammarskjold died Mon day in the crash of a plane carrying the U N Secre
