Necessity of Conservation Soil conservation advocates can find much that is encouraging in the replies of typical lowans about this swbject In a recent cross section poll by the IOWA PUB LI C OPINION PANEL only 10 per cent ac knowledge they do know what term soil s e r v a t i means and every 10 regard soil conservation as important Three in every 5 remember reading about the sub ject or hearing some discussion of it recently 3 in every 5 also be lieve that the state should approp riate more money for soil conser vation activities and 2 in every 3 believe that farmers in soil con servation districts should be re quired by law to cooperate in the program The 2 latter types of opinion re fer to recommendations made by the conservation study committee appointed by Governor Blue in its report made jointly to him and to the Iowa conservation commission Replies in the poll were as fol lows to the question What do you understand by the term soil con servation 47 refer to specific soil conservation practices or purposes explain soil conserv va tion in more greneral terms acknowledge that they do not understand the term The first group which gave specific answers includes these proportions of the entire cross lection 24 say soil conservation means the prevention of erosion refer to contour farm ingor terracing 10 to crop rotation to use of fertilizer lime etc to planting trees growing grass in ditches etc mention other mis cellaneous soil con servation practices The total of these exceeds 47 per cent because a number of the answers refer to several different or purposes of soil con servation Tha largest proportion admit ting they do not understand what soil conservation means was among residents of the per cent of them But others in the city group were even more in clined than those living in the smaller towns or on farms to prove their understanding of the term by referring specifically to erosion control contour farming crop rotation and other specific practices and purposes of soil con servation APPROVE LARGER STATE APPROPRIATION One recommendation by the conservation study committee was a greatly increased state ap propriation for more intensive soil erosion control activities and to assist organized soil conserv ation districts The report stated that federal technicians of the U S soil conservation service are far too few to assist in developing comprehensive plans rapidly enough to meet the basic economic and conservation needs of the state Regarding state appropriations for this purpose voters in the panel were given this explanation and question A member of the Legislative Flood Control Committee in Iowa has recommended that the state appropriate one million dollars to help in the Soil Con servation program Do you think the state should do that or that soil conservation work should be handled entirely by the U S Department of Agri culture In reply 59 say the state should make this appropri ation or even more 29 would leave this activ ity entirely to U S Department of Agri culture think It should be done by the farmers themselves 11 have no opinions By a difference of about 10 per cent residents of the larger cities were more inclined than residents of the towns or those who live on farms to think this work should be done entirely by the U S de partment of agriculture There was also a small difference in the answers to this question depend ing on political party affiliation Contrary to what might be ex pected 5 per cent more republi cans than democrats thought this activity should be left entirely to U S department of agricul ture instead of being supported by the state 1 Stop Light Controls Both Cars Airplanes Anchorage Alaska the only one in Alaska and maybe in the stop light to keep airplanes
