Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - September 10, 1953, Mason City, Iowa Jaycees Set 1954 Budget Halloween Party Scheduled Oct 30 The board of directors of the Mason City Junior Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night set its 195354 budget at The 14membcr board voted 575 for themembership budget This budget includes the expenses I o r operating the organization state and national dues awards meeting programs printing post age and insurance costs expenses of social activities sending official representatives to state and na tional conventions and miscellane ous expenditures The projects budget was set at The Jaycees will use this money for Halloween parties for Mason City youngsters the Miss Mason City contest and various youth activities such as the Soap BoxDerby sending Girl Scouts to camp a Mason City youngster to Boys State memberships to the Mason City YWCA the Voice of Democracy contest for high school students the junior golf tourney and the teenage rodeo Ken Ktw Presides Ken Kew is Jaycee president Other members of the Board are Ralph Shelton state Jaycee vice president Bob Huffman Gerry Burhite and Hal Lilley all Mason City Jaycee vice presidents Bob BeUs Wally Christensen Dr E W Kopal Terry Menzel Don Hu bacher Frank Jeffrey La Verne Herzog Lester Milligan secretary of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce and Guy Zach 195253 Jaycee president Dr Kopal general chairman for he Halloween parties discussed hat event with the directors He said the parties may be resched uled for Oct 30 since Mason City High School plays Fort Dodge at Roosevelt Stadium in a Big Six football game Oct 31 the official date of the Halloween parties Program Committee Lilley wili head up the organiza tions program committee Lilley is third vice president Christensen and Belts arc the other Manslaughter Rape Charges on Agenda The September term of the Cer ro Gordo County grand jury was sworn in Wednesday with J B McGaheran Geneseo Township being named foreman District Judge T A Bcardmore presided Other members of the jury are J J Gaffney Owen George Edg ington Lincoln James H Ran som Lake Fred G Steffen Ma son George Barrett Lime Creek and C J Clausen Falls Among the cases scheduled to be considered by the jurors are A manslaughter charge against Orin F Cory 36 charged with the shotgun slaying of a truck driver friend Ora C Scobee 38 at Corys former residence 1303 Washing ton NW last May 30 a charge against Robert A Young 23 Terre Haute Ind who is accused of raping a 30yearold Mason City mother June 9 and an illegal pos session of narcotics charge against Pearl V McClain 37 Waterloo Also on the grand jurys agenda are several drunk driving cases a larceny charge and several oth er counts including one of carry ing a concealed weapon Mrs C Dwnn Service to Be Thursday Mrs Cal E Dwan 62 wife of the Cerro Gordo County sheriff died at her home 420 2nd N E Tuesday afternoon following a lingering illness Mrs Dwans family was origin ally from Mason City but moved to Chicago where she was born Opai Hov er S e p t 14 1890 The family returned to Ma son City in 1891 and she had ivcd here con inuously since hat time She was married to al E Dwan MRS DWAN May 2 1910 Surviving are her husband a son George Dwan Mason City and Ihree grandchildren She was pre ceded in death by her parents Requiem High Mass will be cele arated at the Holy Family Catho lic Church Thursday at 9 a Auto Crashes Four auto accidents were report ed by Mason City police Wednes day one resulting in heavy dam age and the others causing rela tively light damage The most serious mishap took place at 7 am Wednesday at the intersection of 9th NE and Dela ware Police said Francis Weaver Jr 123 9th NE was driving west on 9th when his car was involved in a collision with another operat ed by Guy Smith Federal The impact forced the Smith car on to the boulevard The front end of the Weaver machine and the left side of Smiths auto were smashed Short in Wiring Firemen were called a few min utes after the crash when wiring shorted out in the Weaver car The blaze caused little damage The other accidents happened at and pm Tuesday and 1 am Wednesday Police said Philip Stohr Aurora and Michael Evanpff 610 Jackson SW were drivers of two cars in volved in the first collision which took place on 6th SE Damage was confined to the right side of Stohrs car Hits Pole A few minutes later John Birk beck 1502 Harding SE reported he was backing his truck into a parking space on 2nd NE when the machine struck a street light There was no damage other than a broken globe on the pole Officers were unable to locate one of the parties involved in the third accident reported Robert Neuman 816 Connecticut NE said he was driving north on North Federal when his rcar struck the rear of another machine which had failed to stop for a traffic signal The unidentified car drove off without stopping Neuman said The front end of Neumans auto received moderate damage H Johnson Service to Be Friday Henry Johnson 79 lifelong resi dent of the Mason City community died at am Wednesday at a Rockwell nursing home follow ing a lingering illness He formerly lived a 830 Pennsylvania S E was a retired farmer Mr Johnson was born Jan 20 1874 at Mason City son of Henry andMarguret Johnson At the age of 25 he was employed as carman on the Milwaukee Road in the Da kota and Mason City areas Later he turned to farming in Cerro Gordo County and retired in 1942 when he moved to Mason City Two years ago he entered the nursing home at Rockwell He was a member of St Josephs Catholic Church Surviving are two brothers Wil liam Johnson and John Johnson Mason City a sister Mrs Henry Mazie Johnson Kunderl Minne apolis a nephew and two nieces He was preceded in death by a sis ter Margaret Flowers Funeral
