irftlnn OH 171 Fantastic story Fake doctor earns in four ye0rs DETROIT AP Authorities were checking Friday into the background of a man who they said earned some while posing as a physician for four years Michigan Atty Gen Frank Kelley Thursday termed the case one of the most fantastic stories of deception in the states medical history Kelley said the man Thomas M Novak 29 of suburban Livo nia had no medical degree Apparently he picked up all his medical knowledge by visit ing different medical schools Kelley said The attorney general said Novak was tripped up after he recently applied as a physician for an insurance policy No record of Novaks doctors certif icate was found Kelley said Kelley said Novak av 1953 graduate of Detroits Chadsey High School faked attend ance at schools of medicine including the University of Michigan Ann Arbor Wayne State University in Detroit and Johns Hopkins University medi cal school Baltimore He would buy a lot nf books but would not actually attend most of the classes Kelley said He picked up a lot of knowledge by simply putting on a white coat and walking into a hospital to observe the opera tions The states chief legal official said Novak prescribed drugs for patients after picking his regis tration number for narcotics prescriptions out of thin ait Kelley said there was no im mediate indication that any of Novaks patients had been harmed or that he had per formed any surgery Novak bought a deceased doc tors practice from the mans heirs in 1960 and specialized in internal medicine treating such ailments as heart and lung di seases and diabetes Kelley said Kelley said Novak who was f t not held might be charged with practicing medicine without a license This carries a maxi mum penalty upon conviction of a fine or up to the existing water pollution control law has undergone little revision since it was enacted 40 years ago Water pollution controlnow is the sole responsibility of the State Health Department The subcommittee of the Gov ernors Public Health Advisory Committee said in its 20page report The Department of Health has never filed a complaint or held a hearing on water pollu tion on its own motion
