streetcars a a result of Thursdays franchise election In this election the Mason Cit I and Clear Lake Railroad company was denied a franchise for the oper I ation of its interurban north t I Fifth street on South Federal ave nue by a vote of to I Proposition No 2 in which the company asked a franchise for the I operation of buses to replace the I abandoned streetcar system car ried by a vote of to The defeat of the interurban franchise was accepted by the com pany officials as a rejection of their proposal for a transportation sys tem in Mason City and that as a result in accord with its announce ment before the election no bus system will be placed in operation by the company Hanlon Issues Statement The following statement was is sued by F J Hanlon general man ager of theMason City and Clear Lake Railroad company The Mason City and Clear Lake Railroad company cheerfully ac cepts the verdict rendered by the people at the special election This company believes it submitted to the people a sound and fair solution of the transportation problem in Mason City and between Mason City and Clear Lake but the voters dis agreed with that view and of ccurse their judgment is final One of the franchises was ap proved by a substantial majority while the other was rejected by a substantial majority Although the proposition was required by law to stated in two separate franchises the two cannot be separated and the failure of the one necessarily defeats the other The management feels that this city needs a comprehensive plan for public transportation and a failure to so provide is a backward step This company is vitally inter ested in the progressive develop ment of Mason City and Clear Lake and desires to cooperate in every way possible to accomplish this pur pose It feels grateful for the many favors extended to it in the past and hopes to merit by its active cooper ation favorable consideration in the Failed in All Precincts The interurban proposition failed to carry in any of the eight pre cincts of the city although in the first precinct of the second ward the noes led by only one vote The inierurban proposition met the heaviest opposition in the second precinct
