Saturday Army Vet Is Accused tis Traitor Sgt Provoo Is Charged With Aiding Japanese New York depart ment officials charged a hand some California army veteran Saturday with being a worse traitor than Tokyo Rose U S Attorney John F X Mc Gohey said Sgt John David Pro voo 33 of San Francisco already has made a number of admis sions concerning charges that during the war he voluntarily as sisted the Japanese The 6foot 2inch redhead was arrested by FBI agents Friday when he received his discharge at Governors Island after 8 years of military service He was arraigned and ordered held without bail for a hearing next Friday Helped Japs Tokyo Rose only broadcast propaganda McGohey said This man was worse He not only aided the Japanese by broadcasting propaganda but he helped the Jap forces in the occupation of Cor regidor Provoo nicknamed Johnny by justice department workers said it was the first time he had heard of the charges He was pale and grave as McGohey reminded him that the charge ol treason carries the maximum penalty of death The attorney said Provoo had been unaware that he was under iiWestigation lor the past 3 years McGohey said that Provoo visit ed Japan in the summer of 1941 just prior to Pearl Harbor and studied Buddhism there On his return to the United States he en listed in the army and was as signed to the Philippines with the rank of sergeant lu Garb of Priest FBI agents said Provoo met Japanese troops who overran Cor regidor in the garb of a Buddhist priest to demonstrate that he could be useful to them because of his knowledge of Japanese lan guage and customs According to McGoheys appli cation for Provoos arrest hi treasonable offer was accepted by the Japanese He was said to have prepared radio scripts and per formed in defeatist broadcasts to American troops from Tokyo a well as performed numerous act of assistance to the Japanesi armies Provoo was identified as a co worker of Mrs Iva Tokyo Rose1 Toguri DAquino by Governmen Prosecutor Thomas DeWolfe wh is conducting her treason trial in San Francisco He said he one considered Provoo as a possibl witness but he was told by th army that he was undergoing serious readjustment period decade Nonprofessional horses and ponies for 3 races are expected to make a full afternoon of fast entertainment for the fairgoers Sunday Monday brings an entirely entertainment program as Jirnmie Lynch and His Death Dodgers take over the grandstand shows for both afternoon and evening With them will be an entirely new vaudeville program replacing the performers of the first 4 days The beautiful girls of the Pa North Iowa Fair PROGRAM RACES icarings are closed it will be demonstrated that the influence racket in Washington is greater than expected Estimates on Price Support Are Given Washington IP Government experts came up Saturday with some estimates of the highest and lowest price supports that could be applicable on farm crops next year if the so called Anderson fancy riders including J D Thornbury of Mason City Holidays Traffic Toll Mounts to 7 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The toll of Laborday weekend traffic deaths in Iowa mounted to 7 Saturday as the state began its observance of the 3day holiday The deaths brought Iowas 1949 highway toll to 348 Victims of automobile accidents Included Mrs Sam McCarty of Onslow who was killed Friday night in a 3car accident near North Eng farm bill becomes even these figures cannot be accurate because the actual support level will depend on the parity indices cqmputed at the time price supports are an nounced on the basis of the prices of things farmers buy Computed on the basis of the parity indices as of July 15 1949 the government experts estimated the highest and lowest support levels for the various crops as Wheat a bushel and corn and cotton 45 and 43 butterfat 65 a pound and milk wholesale a hundredweight and Irish potatoes a bushel and tungnuts 9270 a ton and mohair 61 a pound and 41 and wool 46 a pound top and Supports are based on many conditions under the legislation For other crops than those listed the secretary of agriculture would have wide discretion in determin ing the support levels if there are any supports for other crops at all The house has passed a bill continuing the present price sup port program virtually as is The ultimate law probably will be a compromise between the house bill and the senate measure that is authored by Senator Anderson former secretary of agriculture Real Estate Man Winner in Air Race Cleveland IP Joe Debona who flies for fun and sells Holly wood real estate for a living won the Bendix cross country race for propeller planes Saturday Debonas DarkF51 Mustang streaked across the finish line at the national air races after the 2000 mile run which he covered in approximately 4 hours 16 min utes Two years ago Debona almost won the Bendix and its first prize He trailed Paul Mantz the fabulous flyer of by just over 1 minute There wasnt another contestant in sight when Debona finished Debonas average speed miles an hour was a new record for the Bendix The old mark was 460 MPH set in 1947 pebona already holds the trans continental record for propeller planes with a flight of 4 hours 57 minutes from Los Angeles to New York last March Herman R Salmon of Van Nuys Cal flying one of Mantzs planes was second with an elapsed time of when 2 cars sideswiped on highway 14 south of Newton a lew hours earlier Edward Earth 56 and his wife Alma 58 of Kansas City Mo and Helen Scobby Avondale Mo who were killed early Saturday when the Barth car collided with the rear of a stalled truck near Adair Russell Marugg 17 Monticello who was killed Friday night when the car in which he was riding went out of control on a road near Monticello Mrs Nancy Heslop about 48 of Lehigh who was killed in a 2car collision near Fort Dodge Satur day Fire Destroys Ellsworth JC Iowa main building of Ellsworth junior college was destroyed by fire at 5 a m Satur day during a severe electrical storm The building was struck twice by lightning during a rain storm which measured 165 inch The top floor of the 3story building was entirely burned The remainder of the building was heavily damaged by fire and water The office equipment and rec ords and equipment in the com mercial department and chemistry and physics laboratory were removed but were somewhat damaged by water Insurance totaling WES carried on the building but an estimate could not be made early Saturday as to whether this would be sufficient to cover One hundred students were en rolled in the college School started Monday The central part of the building was erected in 1890 and the wings in 1C91 nnd 1892 Stored on the 3rd floor of the building were many old books some of them 200 years old All were lost Lightning also struck the Chris tian Reformed church in the same vicinity but there was little dam age and no fire Bendix Air Race Record Is Broken by Californiqn Cleveland Major Vernon A Ford of San Francisco shrieked across the finish line at the National Air races with an average speed of 5296 miles an hour Saturday in the fastest time ever made in the Bendix cross country jet division His elapsed time was 3 hours 45 minutes 51 seconds for the 1993mile dash from Muroc Cal air base Ford was flying a Republic F 84 Thunderbolt a single engine fighter rated in the 600 MPH class The winner of the race could not be determined until three other Thunder jets arrived since they started at intervals rade of Stars present their revue Sunday evening for the last time at the fair before going on to the South Dakota state fair Farmers Stream In A half inch rain during the night brought the farmers to the fair Saturday as they left silo fill ing for better weather The Satur day crowd was by far the largest so far this year They came to see a machinery display larger even than the greatest prewar exhibi tion and worth hundreds of thou sands of dollars They came also to see the larg est livestock exhibit in the history of the North Iowa fair It over flowed the barns despite the giant new 4H building just completed for this years exposition They also came to see the dis plays set up by their wives and daughters in Floral hall and the educational demonstrations offered by their sons Largest Carnival And they came for the largest carnival show ever to set up on the North Iowa fair midway Monday will bring them back again for their youngsters will in sist on having their Childrens day arranged by special agree ment between the fair manage ment and the World of Today shows because rural school chil d i had no opportunity to at l I the 1st childrens day on Fri vlonday all children under 16 uin will be admitted free to the ngrounds and they likewise will admitted to all rides and all hows for 9 cents no tax added until 5 p m Auditor Francis DeSart re ported 3782 paid admissions at he gate Thursday and 5348 on Friday These figures do not in clude the 939 exhibitors and oth er tickets also used for admis ion at the gate but paid for in advance The management noted that Fridays attendance was 10 per cent ahead of last
