Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - October 30, 1964, Mason City, Iowa The newspaper that makes all North I o wans neighbors Reportedly was charged in 54 DES MOINES AP Atty Gen Evan Hultman said Fri day that Democratic Gov Har old Hughes was charged with operatinga motor vehicle while intoxicated in 1954 posted bond and it was forfeited The Republican candidate foi governor said he got the infor mation from Hughes himself moments before the two ad dressed a luncheon meeting of the Greater Des Moines Chamb er of Commerce Hushes is Making a twoyear term as governor Hultman said the governor brought the liquor issue into the campaign with ah articleabout Hughes in a national publica tion That article which appeared in Look Magazine told of the governors former liquor prob lem and said hfc was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous Though the alleged OMVI violation was reported to have occurred in 1954 the first paragraph of the Look Maga zine article dated Oct 10 1964 said One afternoon in 1952 Harold E Hughes woke up in a Des Moines hotel room with a splitting headache little money and no memory what had happened in the previous 24 hours He decided then that he would never take another he never Hultman told the audience be asked Hughes about the drunken driving charge because news men had bombarded me with questions about it Hughes interrupted his pre pared speech to answer Hult mans charge The governor said the charge is being made at this llth hour inthe campaign drawn out of the past with the hope of black ening my reputation Hughes said the of poi son was delivered to the press by the former head of a state agency which should have been above all partisan politics Hughesdid not name the offi cial but newsmen have beep contacted in the last two days about the allegation by former Highway Patrol Chief David Herrick of Atlantic a Republi can who lostJin a bid for the nomination for the IowaHouse last June Newsmen also have been con tacted by anaide of Hultmans Hultman asked one newsman whether Hughes had answered the charges outlined to the press Perhaps it may be worth while no matter what it is cost ing me in heart sickness to my family to explain where these charges came from Hughes said He added that he does nol feel it is worthwhile to win an election if he has to ride through the night like a thief Hughes then returned to his The Iowa Medical Society said Fri day it censured two physi cians for alleged abuses in the states Old Age Assistance pro gram and placed them on pro bation for one year The action was taken by the ocietys 11 member Judicial ouhcil this week The society said it deter ined the two doctors to be uilty Exessive visits to and by atients participating in the Old geAssistance program of the late
