continues to hold a commanding lead over President Truman in Iowa Al though Dewey has lost 2 percent age points since a month ago he leads Truman by 4 to 3 The trend as shown by IOWA PUBLIC OPINION PANEL during the last few months has been as follows April DEWEY 41 TRUMAN 21 WALLACE 3 Undecided 35 June 63 50 27 3 It Sept Now 37 a 7 i 12 In interpreting the current di vision of opinion 3 things need to be consid ered 1 Dewey vot ers i n d i c a t e slightly interest ffawa IPtiblic ion Panel more in the election and more of them are sure they will vote 2 S I i g h 11 y f t higher propor tions of demo crats are still undecided while to some extent this indicates lack of interest doubtful voters who go to the polls will largely vote their own party tickets 3 There is more indication of ttraight voting intention among republicans than among democrats Considering all these factors IPOP predicts the division of votes between the presidential candi dates in Iowa will be DEWEY 16 TRUMAN WALLACE 1 Senator George Wilson who trailed exSenator Guy Gillette a month ago has regained his lead but by a very small margin Much of this gain by Wilson is due to an increasing tendency among re publicans to vote it straight This race is still too close for a final prediction and IPOP field workers are continuing to gather opinions on which a final predic tion will be used Republican candidate for gover nor William Beardsley continues to lead the ticket in Iowa with a better than 2 to 1 lead over his democratic opponent Carroll O Switzer Beardsley strongly sup ported by democrats and inde pendents as well as by practically all republicans has shown a large margin over Switzer in all polls July Election Likely Republican candidates for con gress present representatives from all conrgessional districts ex cept the 3rd where HR Gross is a new candidate all appear cer tain of reelection The Iowa Veterans Bonus Pro posal to be voted a separate ballot Nov 2nd appears certain to MAKE of the requirements in the 4county school bus check at Forest City Friday was a brake test Patrolman R W Dick Hahn of Mason City is checking a Scarville bus At 20 miles per hour the buses were supposed to stop on signal within 45 feet This one didnt quite do it but no summons was issued An equipment ticket was written to have the brakes adjusted Results in the check were very good See story on page Favor Bonus Oppose It Undecided LAST WEEK 71 14 13 NOW 15 There has been no significant change in the division of opinions since IPOP first reported on the bonus question in April Since no organized opposition to the bonus proposal has appeared a reversal of opinion now appears very un likely However IPOP recognizes that a prestige factor is involved in being for the veterans and it seems likely that many of those who say they are undecided will vote against the bonus On that basis IPOP predicts that the bonus proposal will carry by a ratio of 7 to 3 French Rail Administrator Is service and armed forces Tournemaine secretary general of the communist railroad workers union had issued a call to union members to block coal trains at French frontiers Reliable reports said commu nists would be purged from all government services as a result of the 27dayold coal strike which the government charged was launched by the Moscowcon trolled communist party to sabo tage the Marshall plan in France Minister of Justice Andrei Ma rie was reported to have been in structed by the cabinet of Premier Henri Queuille to draft a bill pro hibiting civil servants from mem bership in the communist party Chinese Communist Troops Seize Key Manchurian City Woman Dies in Car Collision Near Grinnell Grlnnell JP A Minnesota woman was killed in a 2car col lision near here Friday in which other persons were injured The woman was Mrs Hugh Best 70 of Thief River Falls Minn The accident occurred 8 miles east of here at the junction of highways 63 and 6 The death boosted Iowas 1948 traffic toll to more than on the same date last year Mrs Bests husband about 75 was hospitalized here with a frac tured left kneecap lacerations and shock The others injured all of Gris wold Iowa also were Truman He called upon voters to give government back to the people Is it the 80th congress the Wilson asked because we passed a longrange farm program or is it the worst because we ap propriated to become chairman of the senate agriculture committee if reelected How he said can we trade that for a junior member of the minority side 2 Killed in Car Train Collision Sioux City Russell J Reemts 27 and Pauline Mae Holder 30 were killed in a car train collision here early Satur day Reemts stationed at the Sioux City army air base formerly lived at Akron Iowa The woman also lived in Sioux City The car in which they were rid ing driven by Reemts struck a loaded boxcar at a spur crossing Police Captain C C Robinson said The officer said the car was trav eling at a high rate of speed PEDESTRIAN KILLED Sizonrney Ulin 70 of Delta was fatally injured Fri day night in a truckpedestrian accident The accident occurred while Ulin was walking home highway No 2 Nanking troops fell upon Mukden Manchurias greatest city and wrested it from the armies of Chiang KaiShek Saturday usually reliable sources said Reports from the battlefront said the reds were in complete control of the city which driven to the streets by a 5alarm fire An early morning fire in a 50 apartment building at 6427 Har per avenue killed 4 persons and injured 8 The dead included Hyman Ra linowsky owner of the building woman identified tentatively as a Mrs Sammons an unidentified woman and an unidentified man About a m a fire broke out high in a 3story 48apart ment building at 77th and Green streets 4 miles southwest of the Harper avenue fire None had been reported injured in the 2nd fire Driver Killed as Auto Turns Over Fort Dodge H Ste burg 39 year old truck driver liv ing at Knierim and employed by a Fort Dodge transfer firm was instantly killed in a highway ac cident Saturday morning at 7 oclock as he drove to his work on a gravel road Highway Patrolman Joe Dixon who investigated the crash said that Steburg apparently lost con trol of his car which overturned into the ditch Calhoun County Coroner A A Runquist of Lohr ville said that death was due to a broken neck Both Dewey Truman in Home Loudon Tenn national guard units began moving on this east Tennessee county seat Saturday on orders from Governor Jim McCord to put down threat ened mob violence The order for the troops to move was issued by Governor McCord Nashville He acted as feeling mounted over a case in which the sheriff and a deputy of Loudon county were charge with causing the death of hillbilly singer Ray Brewster in a
