scores again By JOHN K HUTCHENS New York Herald Tribune News Service NEW YORK Old towboa man from Iowa name of Rich ard Bissell is back on the river and dont go asking what river are you a foreigner or something for the first time since a book of his called High Water in 1954 and that ough to make everything all right for awhile see His new effort Good Bye Ava is being published by At lanticLittle Brown Co THERES NO keeping track of this Bissell it seems just the other day he was getting startec with a fine story about his fa vorite place A Stretch on the River though it was really 10 years ago and then he w a s somewhere near the river again but in a pajama factory in IV Cents and after that he was all around Broadway in Say Darling which told how Cents or a novel like it g o t made into a musical show itself Is that all clear Anyhow he is back on the river Theres practically nobody I mean nobody at all likethis Bissell native of Dubuque He writes like its no trouble what ever for him and they say ii isnt One sentence running righl along into another Little jokes but not told like jokes People talking like they were sitting around on boats tied up to the shore in a little Iowa town on the Mississippi just gabbing Thats how Good Bye Ava starts a guy named Frank Blanchard lives on a houseboat by himself gabbing with a neighbor named Clyde Valen tine who has the best construct ed wife on the river and four kids THIS BLANCHARD the one who tells the story comes from a good family up in the town of Blue Rock and runs a company making ice shavers or some thing but what he really likes is the life on the river where he used to work on towboats with his friend Clyde And then a whole bunch of stuff starts happening like it al ways does in a Bissell story but not a lot of plot that keeps hit ting you in the eye This Bissell believes in taking it easy like the characters he writes about at least the ones he likes best Pretty soon sortie other people turn up a rich local sport who thinks he owns the town and does own a good piece of it and a jerk from Memphis president of Imperial Fertilizer Inc who makes a deal with th e local sport to build a big new dock at Blue Rock and drive out people like Blanchard and Valentine who live on houseboats and dont give a darn about progress You think theyre going to take that sitting down youre crazy NOW MAYBE you are won dering who this Ava isthe girl with her name in the title She is Ava Gardner the movie act ress Not right here in Blue Rock where you can see her but hanging around inside the head of this guy Blanchard who keeps thinking about her Let the winds blow across the sands for a million years Ava whispers to him You and I my love will be side by side in Paradise Or she will say Give me a kiss and he does and then Ava says Darling take me away from here Lets go someplace and get a drink It helps a man through some bad times Where does all that leave you It leaves you with this book called Good Bye Ava which if you ask somebody who has read every book of BisselPs is not quite so good as his very best A Stretch on the River and 7V4 Cents but good just the same funny and sharp likt nobody stuff Wright to leave job on Jan 1 No successor as yet J C WRIGHT Hickenlooper raps Demo platform FOREST CITY Speaking at a banquet in his honor here Thursday night Sen Bourke B Hickenlooper said the 1960 Democratic platform is far more socialistic than any plat form the national Socialist party ever dreamed of propos ing The dinner in the civic audi iorium was attended by about 300 persons It was sponsored ay the Winnebago County Cen ral Republican Committee All Republican county candidates were introduced The only other peaker was Curtis Riehm 6th District congressional c a n d i HICKENLOOPER and Riehm spoke at length about Coads re usal to meet his Republican op ponent in a debate The1 Boone man has insisted that Riehm apologize for a charge that toads vote on a bill to strip states of the right to prosecute ndividuals for sedition consti tuted being soft on Commu nism Hickenlooper a member of he Senate Agricultural Commit tee said when Democrats run around talking about a farm program voters should ask hem why they didnt do some hing about it while they could DEMOCRATS WERE in full control of the agricultural com mittees in both houses Hicken ooper said With a majority of presi dential candidate with so great a total of experience CRIPPA DIES ROCK SPRINGS Wyo UP D Ted Crippa 61 former U S Senator and Republican national committeeman died Thursday DES MOINES W J C Wright 57 resigned Friday a i superintendent of the S t a t Board of Public Instruction Wright who has served as state superintendent since 1955 resigned to accept a position as secretary of the Committee for the Advancement of School Ad ministration an agency of the American Association of Schoo Administrators in Washington DC The resignation is effec live January 1 1961 The state board said it ac cepted the resignation with re gret but said it hasnt as yet selected a successor WRIGHT A native of Karnett Kan was serving as superin tendent of the Keokuk public schools prior to his appointmenl as superintendent of the state board in 1955 He was Keokuk superintendent from 1940 to 1954 and previously he had served as principal of Keokuk high school and as an athletics and science instructor in the Keokuk anc Creston high school systems Wright said the new position is a most challenging one anc will provide an opportunity to make a worthwhile contribution at the national level and the wel fare of the children school pa trons and citizens He said the beginning salary of the new job is about 50 per cent above what he is presently receiving He is now getting a year He added AFTER THE General As sembly enacted the legislation establishing the State Board of Public Instruction and before I was approached by members of the state board regarding my present position I said at a number of public meetings that the passage of this statute could well be the most important single school law voted by the Legislature during the past dec ade The board in a statement said ihat since Wright took office in January 1955 public school edu cation in Iowa has made prog ress that has attracted national attention The board cited Wright for upgrading teacher training re quirements upgrading elemen tary and secondary education and his courageous leadership in the field of reorganizations of school districts so that our state has led the nation during the last five years in the in New York Kaminsky was given a suspended seven AP Photbfax year sentence by Russians who tried him on spy charges Bennett was guarded in a hotel room as a witness during Kaminskys trial Kaminsky is from Niles Mich and Bennett from Bath Maine Iowa husband cleaning gun Mother shot but baby saved SIOUX CITY wife of a young Sioux City dentist who had planned to enter a hospital Friday to give birth to her fourth child was shot and killed Thursday night by the accidental discharge of her husbands shotgun Quick w o r k by doctors summoned to Dr Jack G Clapsaddles home saved the life of the baby by caesarean operation The mother Lillian Clap saddle 26 was sitting in the living room where the den tist also 26 had been clean ing the 12gauge shotgun When it discharged the blast struck Mrs Clapsaddle in the chest and she died within a few minutes police investigators said The other children John 6 Dana 4 and Sara 1 were asleep in an upstairs room Clapsaddle summoned neighbors who called a phy sician Dr H H Harris and Dr Thomas L Coriden the Wpodbury County coroner They delivered the baby and worked over it by mouth tomouth and conventional respiration Then the child was rushed to Methodist Hos pital where attendants said Friday it was doingfine Clapsaddle was in a state of shock He was questioned by police County Attorney Ed ward Samore and the coro ner who later ruled the death of the mother accidental The husband also was taken to Methodist hospital In the scene of anguish at the home the other children slept through it all Clapsaddle is a specialist in childrens dentistry Nixon aides cite phony Demo film NEW YORK Presi dent Richard M Nixon Friday charged Sen John F Kennedy with showing a phony film of heir first television debate A Republican campaign spokes man called it vicious political xickery Nixon headquarters also de nounced a political cartoon cir culated by the United Auto Workers saying that it suggests anyone who votes for the GOP presidential candidate is a bigot ROBERT H FINCH Nixons campaign director leveled the attack at Kennedy as the two candidates prepared for the last of the televised campaign de ates Friday night at 9 oclock Finch said a fiveminute tele vised political commercial which appeared in New York Thursday was altered by Kennedy techni cians They changed the se quence of appearances Finch said to portray Nixon as agree DES MOINES UPI Gov Herschel C Loveless Friday branded as sheer politics the furor raised over John Hansen and proceeded to show he had accepted Hansens resignation from the Board of Control ear lier this year The Governor called the en tire issue a big hurrah about nothing and charged that three fulltime state employes were running for county offices on the Republican ticket Hansens Republican opponent in the race for lieutenant gover nor W L Mooty had touched off the dispute by charging that Hansen was seeking any elec tive office while still a member of the Board of Control in viola tion of state law LOVELESS HAD said he ac cepted Hansens resignation but the Board of Control contended he was simply on a leave of sence Three Republican legislators all members of the powerful in terim committee Thursday de manded to see where Hansens resignation had been entered on the official executive journal In the Governors absence Thurs day Park Rinard Loveless ad ministrative assistant had re plied there was no listing for the official acceptance of the resig nation However Loveless Friday pro duced the official journal and on page 243 under a July 1 1960 date there appeared the follow ing words Resignation o John R Han sen Manning Iowa as a mem ber of the Iowa Board of Con trol THE GOVERNOR SAID never enter an acceptance of a As far as I know it has never been done since 1856 The Governor agreed with statehouse attorneys that there is no legal procedure that must be followed in accepting a res ignation He said his administrative as sistant was technically correct in telling state Sens John Shoe man Atlantic and Lawrence Putney Gladbrook and State Rep George Paul Brooklyn that the acceptance was not noted But he pointed out it is not necessary to do so The Governor showed other resignations during his term of office and all were listed in the same manner as Hansen HOWEVER Loveless did not explain why Hansen continued to collect his pay from July lt until Sept 15 the date his al leged leave of absence went into effect As far as Im concerned thats between Hansen and the Board of Control Loveless said but he added that the two other board members George allenius and Jim 0 Henry had requested that Hansen re main on the job during the sum merlong budget hearings Loveless said the three in terim committee members would have had no interest in it had it been a
