Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - October 19, 1948, Mason City, Iowa NORTH IOWAS DAILY PAPER EDITED FOR THE HOME TH THAT MAKIS ALl NOtTH IOWAMS VOL LV Auodated and United Press Full Lease Wires Five Centi Copy MASON CITY IOWA TUESDAY OCTOBER 19 1948 Paper Consists of Two No 8 Voters Show Apathy Toward Candidates By ARCHIBALD M CROSS LEY Director The Crossley Poll Latest poll results indicate that only 56 per cent of all adult citi zens are now likely to vote on Nov 2nd This would make the total turnout approximately 52 millions On the basis of latest standing of the candidates Dewey would have a total of millions Truman 22i millions Wallace 2 millions and Thurmond 1 million There is very great apathy on both sides but it is somewhat greater among the democrats The poll indicates the probable turnout of persons preferring Dewey is still about 8 per cent greater than lor those preferring Truman However the poll has shown a small increase in the likely turn out of democrats and no change for the republicans In 1944 this poll showed that one of the fac tors contributing to Deweys de feat was a lower turnout rate for him than tfor Roosevelt In order to ascertain how many are likely to vote the Crossley Poll uses a series of questions to determine first whether the per son interviewed meets voting qualifications and 2nd whether he has sufficient interest to take the trouble to vote The results from these questions were classified in terms of high interest casual in terest and little interest The following table shows that as of Oct 1 highest interest is among the Thurmond followers with Dewey 2nd II Tightening of Blockade Is Denounced Big 3 Delegates Say Talks Useless Under Circumstances Paris big 3 western powers denounced Russia before the United Nations risen only 1 point AP Wirephoto EGGS Wallace hand upraised laughs off the eggs dropped at his feet Monday night as the progres sive party presidential candidate made an address at an indoor arena in Percentages With Hfh Interest Thurmond Truman Dewey Wallace Oct 1 77 50 63 si Sept 1 69 47 61 50 These figures in conjunction with other recent analyses sug gest that Dewey may have reached or nearly reached his peak and that Truman is making a little progress Thurmond has already reached a high level of interest and may be near his maximum The Wallace interest is more casual and his likely voters as shown in a previous article appear to be declining In the light of these things it would appear that whatever gains are still to be made before the election will be slightly in Trumans favor In that event Dewey though still holding the lead may decline to less than 50 per cent of the total vote In 1944 against Roose velt he had over 46 per cent Copyrlfht 194S Crussley Incorporated Dewey The republican presidential nominee worked here Tuesday on his next major campaign speech to be delivered Wednesday night in New York City before the Her aldTribune forum He is ex pected to discuss plans for devel opment of the nations resources Dewey will make a nonpoliti cal speech at an Al Smith memo rial dinner in New York Thurs day night Plans for the weekend are not definite TicketSplittinr With his 2nd campaign trip be hind him Dewey and his strate gists were said to be convinced that there is going to be a lot of ticket splitting this fact possibly more than ever before This apparently is due to inter est that has developed in senate and house races and in some in stances in close contests for gov Marshall Sees Pope Pius XII Also Confers With Alcide DeGasperi Castel Gandolfo S Secretary of State George C Mar shall and his wife had a 30 min ute audience with Pope Pius XII Tuesday at the pontiffs summer residence here The Vatican said in a communi que that they talked about matters of peace and the good of human ity The holy father conversed cordially with his excellency the minister for about a half hour on various matters which are of in terest in the Athens called on Italian Premier Alcide de Gasperi Monday night and la ter was host at a dinner for a selected group of Italian and American officials including de Gasperi and Foreign Minister Count Carlo Sforza ernorships The Dewey camps feeling Is that its candidate will win by what might amount almost to a andslide in electoral votes Some of his more optimistic supporters are counting close to 400 of the 531 electoral votes in iis column Others scale this down o nearer 325 No Landslide But even with a topheavy re sult in electoral votes most of Dewey strategists dont think their candidate will have a landslide in the popular vote Because of this they are frankly afraid that Deweys margin in some states will not be large enough to pull through some re publican senators who are under hot fire The indications are they say that straight ticket voting may not be up to par for presidential elec tions While this wiil hurt republican candidates in states which Dewey may carry with slim margins bal lot splitting also is expected to help some GOP entries in states that may give President Truman a narrow majority Training for Airlift Crews Now Underway Great Falls Mont ing of flight
