extension home economist the program is al ready underway with meetings luiviiif been held in Owen Union and Lincoln Townships Last year 1463 families in Ccrro Gordo County alone wore influenced by some phase of th extension home economics pro gram said Miss Buchanan Tha mark may be even better thi year Leaders Attend Present at these meetings arc leaders of womens clubs am neighborhood groups in the com munity Its a club if it has name elects officers and meets regularly Otherwise it is called a neighborhood group At these meetings a well planned lesson is followed thai takes up the entire the most popular chicken breed in Iowa the Iowa Crop and Livestock Reporting Service says of a survey made last fall Leghorns accounted for 368 per cent of all hens and pullets on Iowa farms Inbred hybrids made up the second largest group total ing 207 per cent Straight breeds of chickens comprised slightly more than Gl per cent of state flocks Other favorite breeds were White Rock 118 per cent and New Hamp shire 86 per cent The reporting service empha iized that the figures in the report did not constitute a recommcnda but merely showed the dis tribution of various breeds cross es and the US from 1DOO to the present day has been com piled and edited by R K Bliss former director of the Iowa Agri cultural Extension Service in a book ThcSpirit and Philosophy of Extension Work The book made up of un published papers will serve to set the historical record of extension work straight for future refer ence said Bliss It traces the evolution of the cooperative extension movement from the Sioux County exoeri ment station set up by the Iowa State College at the request of fanners in the area and the work of Dr Seaman A Kriapp in the South to the present exten sion program The work repre sents three years of research on the part of Bliss in bringing to gether all of the papers necessary to be processed for the final con tent of the book Cooperating in publishing the book are the
