Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - October 14, 1929, Mason City, Iowa OCTOBER 14 MASON CITY GLOBSGAZETTE SEVEN OIL CANNOT BE FOUND BENEATH IOWAS SURFACE Recent Geological Survey Is Definite in Statement of States Resources DES MOINES Oct 14 well drilling in Iowa has given lit tle encouragement to oil prospect ors who hope that these secondary services might offer up proof of oil deposits W H Norton the Iowa Geological Survey declared in a on deep wells in the current issue of state geological reports Various favorable conditions Sitwe been noted in drilling in aomo parts of the state but thu oil deposits have been lacking in appre ciable quantities the report stated It is pointed out however thnt the field in Iowa regarded by J V Howcll as the one area which mer its in any degree attest for southwestern part is the area least prospected by deep wells No Oil Present The old theory that if drilling is done deep enough any mineral or oil deposit may be found has seen exploded by deep well drilling in Iowa the reason that such wells have for the most part gone down to strata beyond which oil or miner al is not deemed existent Aa a rule deep wells have gone deep the deepest of them hardly exceed 3000 find any there pos sibly can be the report stated The wells however have amply repaid the drillers by the deliv er No Cornier or Iron L The report further staled in part As to copper and iron and Other precious metals the futility of pros pecting for them in Iowa is shown by an elementary geology of the state As to coal the areas where it may be found have long since been mapped But in the case of oil the conditions of its accumulation are such that each deep well aunk has had some value as a prospect hole for that locality Every deep well drilled in Iowa is carefully ex amined for presence or absence the conditions indicating oil In general the lie of the strata of the state is proved by its deep well sections to be too uniform to favor the structures necessary for oil accumulation Yet occasionally as at Oakdale Ames and perhaps at Failfield the drill has found marked upwards of the deeper beds Of hundreds of wells drilled scarcely one has shown even a trace of oil Allison Grocery Is United With Chain ALLISON Oct broth ers store of Allison has joined in the Great Rite Way system chain liy this movement they will remain an independent unit but will have
