Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - October 13, 1964, Mason City, Iowa Barry is behind in Midwest Pin hopes on local races RICHARD DOUGHERTY httrald Tribum WASHINGTON How do things look for Sen Btrry Gold water in the socalled Repub lican Heartland of Ohio Indi ana Illinois and Iowa In the judgment of most of the GOP Presidential nominees own party leaden there no good Hes still got a lot of prob lems says an Ohio profes sional Lefs face it Barrys way behind was the observation of an Illinois leader who is putting all his bets on the gubernato rial effort of Charles H Percy and hoping the popular Percy can avoid being crushed under what now looks like a landslide for President Johnson Variations of these opinions were echoed by almost every Republican practitioner this re porter talked to in the midwest The two larger ones Ohio and each with 26 electoral among those heavily populated states which Goldwa ter has said he must win if he is to stand a chance of victory NOV 3 Indiana which has net Democratic in a Presidential election since 1936 is slightly lower on the scale of importance for Goldwater strate gists The gloom among GOP of ficials is not so t deep in In diana as it is in Iowa Ohio and Illinois but it is discernible Thus Goldwater is in the final month of his campaign for the presidency with little assurance that Ohio which in 1960 gave former Vice President Richard Nixon a plurality of 273363 or Illinois which went to Presi dent Kennedy by only 8858 will not both wind up solidly in the Democratic column And his hopes to keep the more traditionally loyal Iowa and Indiana within the Party fold must be counted as slim However veteran Party men contend that in all four states there remains a relatively high percentage of undecided voters This in the words of an Ohio official means that if people are hesitant about Barry they also are uneasy about Johnson If we just got a break of some sort things could tip back Another factor which could bring about an improvement in the Goldwater fortunes is the strong campaigns which are be ing waged by candidates for state offices in the three states In Illinois GOP confidence is high that Percy the vigorous corporation executive who is seeking his first elective office may run up a whopping vote against his Democratic rival Gov Otto Kcrner In Ohio a somewhat restrained optimism envelopes the effort of Rep Robert A Taft jr son of the late Senator to unseal Sen Stephen M Young The magic of the Taft name still prevails in Ohio and the voter response to it on the ballot could enhance Gold waters chances of squeaking by In Iowa Atty Gen Evan Hull man Republican is running an active campaign against Demo cralic Gov Harold Hughes Hughes leads in voler polls but those polls also show Hultman gains and an increase in the number of undecided voters Ike BG not responsible for Senate comments GETTYSBURG Pa AP Former Prcsidcnl Dwight D Eisenhower says his fellow Re publican
