of Labor Zagreb Yugoslavia bishop Alojzijc Stepinac waiting to begin a sentence of 16 years at forced labor remains the head of the Roman Catholic church in Yugoslavia Bishop Joseph P Hur ley regent of the Apostolic Nunci ature in Belgrade said Saturday The replate found guilty of collaboration with the puppet Croaian government during the war was considered in canon law to be impeded Bishop Hurley said that sofaras he knew the Holy See still would consider the archbishop the head of the Yugo slav Catholics At present the archbishopric is being conducted by the senior auxiliary bishop of the diocese Bishop SalisSalwees The archbishop was given 48 hours Friday in which to appeal his sentence to the general assem bly of Croatia However Bishop Hurley said he did hot believe the archbishop would appeal He re called that the archbishop himself said during the trial he would ask for no mercy and accept whatever sentence was meted out to him insisting throughout the trial that his conscience was clear Archbishop Stepinac also was sentenced to be deprived of civil rights for 5 years and his property was ordered confiscated The 3 judge court in this case evidently referred to
