Stones Tornado Strikes Near Newton BT THE ASSOCIATED FEES8 Thunderstorms accompanied by hail lightning and s c r o n g across Iowa Wed nesday night as a cold front rolled across the state Heavy damage was caused by hail in the Ankeny area north of Des Moines Unofficial damage estimates there ran as high as A tornado roared through a farm area southwest of Newton No injuries were reported but the twister left a trail of damaged farm buildings broken trees and fallen utility lines Some points had heavy rain Lineville on the IowaMissouri border in Wayne County report ed two inches Bedford reported hail and VA inches of rain COOLER TEMPERATURES followed the storm At Ankeny a town of about 1300 seven miles north of Des Moines the hail came down in big chunks of ice andin balls measuring 10 inches Practically house in the community wasleft with windows Roofs and hoods of cars were dam aged and some ice chunks were so large that they made gaping holes in house roofs Three Ankeny school buildings were unable to open for classes Thursday because so many of their windows were smashed out The storm part of a general disturbance that stretched diag onally from southwest Iowa to the northeast section around Du buquebrewed localized force in Polk and Jasper counties A TORN AD 1C CLOUD swooped down and cut path 200 feet wide along a country road run ning east for about four miles to the intersection of Iowa 14 south west of Newton Along the twisters path were houses and outbuildings in about 15 farms A number of the farm families were attending a Grange meet ing at Monroe 14 miles south of Newton and were outside the dan ger zone Others took refuge in storm cellars The twister struck mostly at outbuildings and trees but some farmhouses suffered damage e in lowd US Tanks
