Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - October 8, 1948, Mason City, Iowa NORTH IOWAS DAILY PAPER EDITED FOR THE HOME HOME EDITION THE NIWStAriK THAT MAKES ALL NORTH IOWAMS VOL LIV Awclated and United Presj Full Five Cents Copy MASON CITY IOWA FRIDAY OCTOBER 8 1948 This Paper Consists of Two No S14 Little Change in Southwest Voters Choice By ARCHIBALD M CROSSLEY Director the Crossley Poll As the 2 campaign trains moved not very far apart in the south xvestern part of the country Pres ident Truman and Governor uewey were met with divided opinion Polls completed imme diately prior to their appearances showed a tossup in Colorado a preference for Dewey in Califor nia a preference for Truman in Arizona and a slight lead for Dewey in Nevada Polling in California the latter part of September showed no sig nificant variation in results from Sept 1 figures The comparison follows Late Sept Sept 1 Dewey 51 52 Truman 41 41 Wallace 8 7 The single point shift may rep resent a slight decline for Dewey during the interim between the periods covered or it is small enough to he due to the normal mathematical limitations of re sults taken from samples of the population The figures for the other states are as Dewey 49 Truman49 Wallace 2 Nev 50 48 Ariz 45 51 4 These states show no major change between the first and 2nd polls but do not yet show what differences may have been caused by the visits of the candidates For this jyurppse a 3rd poll will he undertaken shortly In California 25 electoral votes the Wallace vote makes the Dewey lead clear cut Considering only the 2 major parties Dewey has 55 per cent and Truman 45 per cent of their total The republican can didate is therefore 10 points ahead and the state seems reasonably sure for Dewey and Warren In Colorado 6 votes the 2 major parties divide evenly In Nevada 3 votes Dewey has under 51 per cent and Truman over 49 per cent of the 2party total less than 2 points apart In Arizona 4 votes Dewey has 47 per cent and Tru man 53 per cent of the 2party total The state is therefore likely but not yet certain to go for Tru man During the Roosevelt years the mountain states were normal ly democratic reaching very high percentages in 1936 Six of the 8 mountain states voted for Roose velt for a 4th term Utah giving him 61 per cent of the 2party total Wyoming gave Dewey 51 per cent and Colorado gave Dewey 53 per cent By contrast in the last republican election all 8 states went heavily republican Hoover took 66 per cent of the Colorado 2party vote 64 per cent of the Wyoming vote 59 per cent of the Montana vote and even 54 per cent of the Utak vote where his poorest mountain states show ing was made The present indications are that this year these states generally will show a closer division of opinion than other parts of the country Copyright 1D4S Crosslcy Incorporated Permission to reproduce in full hereby rranied to subscribing newspapers Forecast Record Soviet Grain Crop Moscow 1948 grain crop
