Yanks met the Athletics in Philadelphia A defeat for either contender meant the end of the trail Even a victory would smack more of a reprieve than a pardon The executioner was that hot on their trail Prolonging Agony Both the Sox and the Yanks en joyed a few moments of provoca tive elation Wednesday when the Tribe fell behind the White Sox 20 in the 2nd inning and stayed there until the 5th But Cleveland won 52 while New York beat the As 51 and Boston beat the Sen ators 42 to prolong the agony at least another day The lead the White Sox assumed looked dangerously good until the Cleveland broken heart The 32 year old slugging Bos ton Braves outfielder who suf fered a broken left ankle bone sliding home against the Brook lyn Dodgers Wednesday looked emptily at the white ceiling and muttered halfaudibly Biggest Disappointment I waited 12 years to play in a world series and now something like this has to happen When I realized Id be out of the series it just broke my heart This is the biggest disappointment of my life Heaths accident occurred in the 6th inning He had belted a tre mendous 380 foot double to deep center and then streaked for home when Bill Salkeld singled to right I began to slide about 5 feet from the plate Funny thing I generally get my spikes up off the ground but this time I didnt Next thing I knew I was in agony on the ground I looked at my foot which was twisted all the way around and honestly I thought it would come right off The lights temporarily went out on Jeff as he was carried from the field into the clubhouse on a stretcher Then he DiMaggio dropped pinch hitting Carl Scheibs fly and then with one out Barney McCosky doubled to put men on 2nd and 3rd Ferris Fain walked loading the bases Hank Majeski was next He hit a bounder to Frankie Cros etti who lashed the ball to Phil Rizzuto forcing Fain Rizuto spun around arid threw to Tommy Hen rich at first getting Majeski for the double play which ended the game Bob Porlerfield was Indians Edge Over Braves Rests With 2nd Base Duo By LEO H FETERSEIST New York for man pitch for pitch hit for it all adds up to the Cleveland Indians in the 1948 World viding they win the American league pennant But thats on paper only things might dnd well could be differ ent on the diamond Particularly with a guy like Billy Southworth guiding the destinies of the Bos ton Braves So Far With So Little This the year of 1948 will be his greatest in baseball Never has a manager gone so far with so little Whether he can go still further remains to be seen but the odds are against it For there is no department in which the Braves measure up to their probable World Series rivals the Cleveland Indians Class is the Indians stock in trade South worth is the Braves And a manager may not be enough tp win the series True he has a couple of Johnny Sain and Warren Spahn in after them he has only a couple of ball players and a misfit collection of has beens and retreads Indians Have Stars Still they were good enough to win the National league pennant and an old baseball saying goes that Southworth never should be sold short But it would be even more of a miracle if he came out on the front end of the series for it doesnt appear that it has what it takes to beat a collection of stars such as Lou Boudreau Joe Gordon Bobby Feller Ken Kelt ner Bob Lemon and Gene Beard en But anything can happen in a short series and Billy the Kid has come out on top before with un derdog clubs It doesnt look like he can do it again particularly with hard hitting Jeff Heath out with a broken ankle but South worth has overcome bigger handi caps before and never gives in an New York and if the Indians and Braves meet in the World Series it will be a team averaging 292 years in age against one averaging 299 probably doesnt prove anything except that Clevelands Joe Gor don isnt the only player who can carry the nickname of Old Pro but it also gives you an indication that few rookies have been able St Joe Loses to Swaledale in Sectional Swaledale defeated St Josephs of Mason City 32 to capture the sectional baseball title at Sheffield Wednesday afternoon Jim VerHelst St Joe pitcher allowed only 2 hits but walks set up the Swaledale runs all of which were unearned Kuhler was on the mound for Swaledale and effectively scattered 9 hits Swaledale counted 2 runs in the first inning when a wild peg by Joe Carlson permitted both mark ers to cross the plate The game winning run was made in the 4th when Bramson walked and Glenn Cabbell and Dick Colloton com mitted errors to permit himto score The Johawks counted their 2 markers in the 5th on a double by Roy Georgoff and singles by Andy Patten and Cabbell The linescore R H E Swaledale 200 100 Z 3 St Joe 000 020 9 4 Other finals muffed most of the tough ones except the North CarolinaTexas game in which we granted a shaky nod to the Tarheels Lots of headliners on this weeks slate LAST WEEKS RESULTS to make grade so the far pennantwinning The Indians range from 23yearold Al Rosen up to Satchel Paige who for con venience is pegged at 40 the Braves from Earl Torgeson 24 to Nelson Potter 37 Since both managers use their men liberally it isnt possible to strike an aver age for the regulars But chances are if you listen carefully youll be able to hear the creaking limbs over the crowd noises The Gentle Touch Another of those football kick off stories comes from Lou Kus serow and concerns the first time carried the ball for Columbia Lou just got his hands on a Syracuse kickoff in the end zone fumbled the ball and bias started knocking down Syra cuse players and Kusserow kept running for 90 yards When the play ended Donelli started to obey orders Better leave reau The Indians manager more than anyone else gives his team a decided edge in manpower He is an infield in himself That 2nd base combination of Boudreau and Gordon is the best in baseball The Braves have a good one too in Rookie Alvin Dark and Peppery Eddie Stanky But there is doubt whether Stanky will be able to play in the series and even if he does he cant fill Gordons shoes 3rd Base Even Its a dead heat at 3rd base even though Bob Elliott the Na tional leagues most valuable player year has had an off year But he still hits a long ball as does Keltner So for that spot the manpower is equal The situ ation is pretty much the same at first base with no standout on either club Southworth uses aging Frank McCormick past his prime when right handers pitch against the Braves and Earl Torgeson a far cry from his 1947 rookie year against southpaws With Walt Judnich who also plays the out field a doubtful starter because of an injury Big Ed Robinson fig ures to hold down first base for the Indians Neither of the 3 can be classed as a star In infield reserves the 2 clubs appear equal so it all adds up to that 2nd base combination of Boudreau and Gordon They give the Indians a big infield edge over their World Series opponents him in said Little Hes only a kid You might hurt his feelings if you took him out End of the Line Bobby Ruffin who finally was retired from fighting has gone in to partnership with Maurie Wax man in the next year Dont ever tell anybody this Heath whispered leaning closer but I began to cry while South worth was talking to me And then do you know what he said He said Jeff dont worry about a thing Well win the series for you Commenting on Heaths injury Southworth said Well Bounce Back This will enhance our deter mination more than ever Well bounce back We had other in juries this year but our boys just took a hitch to their belts and dug in Southworth couldnt be certain about a replacement but it was understood he would petition Commissioner A B Chandler to bring up either Marv Ricket or
