left the 325pound payload is mounted on the third stage It rode inside a twopiece plastic shroud The shroud was to be ejected after the first 75 miles and then paddles containing solar batteries were to spring out behind the cylindrical instrument package At right is the entire missile nearly 100 feet tall and weigh pounds Rocket to moon fizzles CAPE CANAVERAL FJa The most powerful rocket ever developed by this nation failed on its maiden flight Thursday and ruined a U S bid to put the first satellite around the moon The giant Atlas Able rocket thundered aloft exactly on scheduled at Perched atop it was a 372pound payload designed for the lunar orbit An hour after launch the Na tional Aeronautics and Space Ad ministration reported that sec ondstage signals were lost 70 seconds after launching There is no record of the sec ond stage having fired and we must presume that the second stage did not the NASA said VISUAL observations wtrt that a piece fell off the rocket Apparently this was above the liquid oxygen tank on the Observers saw a fiery chunk break loose from the rocket about 20 seconds after launch and spiral into the Atlantic Ocean The failure was a bitter blow to hopes of jumping back into the space race with the So viet Union which in recent weeks has scored spectacularly with its Lunik II and III rockets One smacked into the moon the other whirled into a wide orbit around the moon and earth took the first pictures of the moons dark side There is no backup vehicle for Thursdays shot so it probably will be several months Before another can be attempted THIS WAS THE fail ure for an AtlasAble ticketed for a shot at the moon On Sept 24 another one of the 10story high rockets blew up on its pad during a static test Thursdays illfated satellite carried a scanning device to take crude pictures of the lunar surface It also contained instru ments to study the moons en rivonment A successful orbit would have given the a space first Scientists here believe this would have been a greater accomplish ment than either of the last two Lunik shots because of the dif ficulty of placing the payload in a precise position in relation to the moon A flash in the sky about four minutes after liftoff indicated burnout of the Atlas booster The second stage was to ignite almost immediately and many persons mistook the Atlas burn out for
