VOL LXI Associated Press and United Press Full Lease Wires Sewn Cents a Copy MASON CITY IOWA MONDAY NOVEMBER 22 1954 This Paper Consists u Two Ona No 37 After Beardsley Is Killed in Highway Accident Near Capital Leo Elthon Takes Oath as Governor One Mans Opinion A Radie Commentary By W EARL HALL GlobeGoxette Editor This That and the Other Thing IVE sort of been saving up for this little Visit with you I have a number of things in mind all of them rather hope but none of them important enough to justify a fulllength commen tary So it will be touchandgo on a widely varying field of subject matter And Im going to start off with some observations Ive made in recent months by reason of my contacts with students and other visitors from other countries Ive played host to some and visited with several others And Ive found all of them most stimulating One of the facts about every one of them I could discuss at some length is their attitude toward Communism and the peril it pre sents to the free world Not one of them T must report has been as much concerned about this prob lem as I Im not one who sees Communist around every corner or under every bed Do We Worry Too Much You Americans do too much worrying about the nearly every one of these visitors from other lands has suggested And some of them have added Its a good thing you dont live as close to the Russians as WE do Whether we are overanxious or our allies in the free world top apathetic remains to be seen Im not trying in this commentary to judge Im just reporting And while Im it I must report too that baseball isnt about to become the national pas time of any country other than ours unless perhaps it be Japan These visitors who had seen our diamond sport for the first time had this one reaction almost with out exception Your baseball is too slow Its Slow Motion One of my foreign friends he had a wonderful sense of humor described for me with suitable pantomime how the behavior of our baseball pitchers had impressed him rosin bag look at the bases check and doublecheck on catchers signals much nodding of the head the deliberate stretch and at long last the throw And by this time like as not the batter has become weary of waiting and stepped out of the batters box That means the whole performance has to be re peated That may be fun for the pitcher and the my new friend suggested with a smile But I should think it would bore the other players say nothing of those in the stands who should be watch ing some Americans accept all this be cause weve grown up on But it isnt easy to sell to those who have been accustomed to fastmov ing sports such as soccer hockey la crosse and a dozen other games that could be named Soccer Leads Them All Incidentally at least three of my friends of other lands had a like criticism to lodge against the American brand of football Here again they insisted theres far more waiting than watching Only basketball among our team gports could measure up to the de mand for constant action and in our court game there would be more than a little criticism of the piccolo solo which some officials seem bent on playing While Im on the subject of sports it may surprise you to learn that neither baseball nor football not even basketball is the worlds most popular sport from the spectator standpoint Soc cer has this distinction A recent match in Rio dc Janeiro Brazil drew fans There have been turnouts almost as large at soccer games in England and Sweden and in the nearly 50 other countries where it is played Soccer contains elements of foot ball basketball hockey and other games liked by Americans One wonders therefore why it has never managed to make the grade here fci the United States Ftirt Owtdraw Speaking of box office appeal it surprise you to learn that COMTTNUID ON f ACI 2 AP Wiccphoto ELTHON TAKES Gov Leo Elfchon Fertile right Monday morning was sworn in as governor of Iowa by Chief Justice T G Garfield of the Iowa Supreme Court
