of Winters First Bad Storm Catch Bandit 1 Hour After Bank Robbed Minneapolis lone ban dit robbed a bank at Chanhassen Minn of Saturday but was captured less than an hour after the robbery the Hennepin county sheriffs office reported Chanhassen is just southwest of Minneapolis in the northeast tip of Carver county W H Fabriz chief criminal deputy in the sheriffs office said the bandit was captured at a road blockade thrown up east of Chan hassen immediately after the rob bery had been reported The rob ber was taken by Hennepin county deputies he said Few details were known The bank was robbed at a m and the bandit captured at a m Fabritz said a person in the bank at the time it was robbed pro vided the license number of the car driven by the bandit Move Against Sec Marshall AFL Would Favor Harriman for Post Cincinnati AFLs 67th convention Saturday prepared new moves in what one high of ficial said has become a full scale offensive to get Secretary of State George C Marshall out of Presi dent Trumans cabinet On another front the AFL ex ecutive council recommended es tablishment of a super lobby to get the new congress to push through laws favored by organ ized labor The convention ploughed into its 8th consecutive fullday session in high anticipation of the visit late Saturday of Vice President elect Alben W Berkley Barkley is expected to get an earful on the AFLs views on Marshall and do mestic legislation even thougi his visit is scheduled to be briefv AFL sources said they respect Marshall as a soldier and fully support his aid plan for Europe But the labor leaders who have played a big part in administration of that plan abroad re dissatis fied with Marshalls handling of Russia and China and with some phases of military government ad ministrations in Japan and Ger many One official said the AFL hopes Marshall will be replaced by W Averell Harriman ambassador in Paris for the European aid pro gram AFL president William Green said he personally favors such a highways were open but some roads in northwestern Iowa were limited to emergency traffic The patrol specifically asked that motorists avoid highway 71 north of Spencer and highway 9 east of Spirit Charged to Blizzard 3rd Person Is Missing Kansas City early win ter storm whipped into the lakes region Saturday after marooning hundreds of persons and stalling trains in western Kansas Nebras ka and South Dakota Two deaths were charged to the blizzard as authorities reported most of the missing persons had reached safety A 3rd person was missing Five trains still were stalled at terminal points but their passen gers were safe Four of them were on the Rock Island lines at Good land in northwest Kansas and the 5th was the Union Pacifics city of St Louis at Weskan on the KansasColorado liue Officials did not know immediately whether it was the east or west bound train Found Dead Fred W Lick 68 a Cimarron Colo rancher and his wife 63 were found dead in their wrecked light truck at the foot of a steep embankment on Cerro Summit The highway patrol said the truck apparently skidded off an icy stretch of U S Highway 50 A Continental Airlines pilot fly ing from Denver to Hutchinson Kans radioed he had sighted a school bus 12 to 16 miles south of Oakley Kans The bus was only half a mile from a country school and since normal activity was ap parent around the school the pilot believed all children were safe Passengers Safe Fifteen passengers on a stranded Greyhound bus were at the farm home of Everett Hays west of Colby in northwest Kansas There was no telephone line into Hays home He was bound over to the federal grand jury under bond on a charge of bank robbery Safford who has admitted rob bing the Sheffield Savings bank together with Bernard D Morgan 26 Hampton was magazine Refrigeration Industry reported Fire Destroys Small Town 20 Persons Are Left Homeless Havens Nebr virtu ally destroyed this little eastern Nebraska town early Saturday and left the entire population of 20 persons homeless and short of food The of undetermined ori gin started in the towns only grocery store at 2 a m and whipped by strong winds spread through the village The Silver Creek fire depart ment unsuccessfully fought the blaze and towns people fled their homes in the subfreezing tem peratures Destroyed were 3 homes the grocery store blacksmith shop grain elevator and theater Longshoremen Slash Demands by Half U S Against Taking Negev From Israeli Paris The United States told the United Nations Saturday the Negev desert area of southern Palestine should not be taken from Israel without full consent of the Jews The United States in a long1 awaited statement on Palestine also told the 58nation political committee it looks forward to admission of Israel to the United Nations Dr Philip C Jessup the Amer ican deputy said the government in Washington generally is in ac cord with the conclusions of the assassinated mediator Count Folkc Bernadotte with the ex ception of certain principles con cernjiflgboundaries Bernadotte proposed that the Negev be turned over to the Arabs and that the Jews take western Galilee in exchange The Israelis now in control of the Negev Forrest Gobeli 43 was riding nor the truck which struck it at an intersection 4 miles north of Meservey Friday afternoon overturned They are shown here as they stood in the ditch southeast of the intersection after the collision The front end of the truck is smashed and the left rear door of the car crumpled Mrs Gobeli was sitting next to that door Driver of the car was her son Harlan Gobeli 21 Other occupants of the car suffered only bruises Woman Killed in Automobile Accident North of Meservey Test of SUI Atom Smasher Is Successful Iowa City A successful dry run test has been made with the University of Iowas atom smasher The machine has been under construction for 8 years Prof James A Jacobs of the physics department and his staff of research workers Friday di rected a stream of atomsmash ing particles toward the spot where a target will be fixed when fullscale operations begin Numerous previous tests were thwarted by failure of various parts of the machine It is be lieved to be the largest atom smasher of its type in operation Mrs Forrest Gobeli was killed Friday afternoon at an intersection of 2 county roads 4 miles north of Meservey when the car in which she was riding was struck by a truck driven by Frederick Weide Meservey Her husband and son Harlan Gobeli driver of the car and his wife as well as Weide were brought to a Mason City hospital after the accident but none were seriously injured according to deputy sheriffs who investigated the accident Not Serious Forrest Gobeli and Mrs Harlan Gobeli were not immediately re leased from the hospital but at tendants said Saturday morning that their condition was not ser ious The Gobeli car was eastbound on a gravel road officers said while the truck was southbound on county road A Harlan Gobeli told the officers that he looked northward as he stopped for the county highway and the road was clear He then turned to speak to the other occupants of the car and looked to the south along the highway as he drove onto it he said Weide told officers that his truck crime up over a hill toward the intersection and he saw the GobeJi car slowing down He then looked to the east he said and immediately afterward the col lision occurred Strikes Car Door Officers said the truck struck the left rear door of the Gobeli car beside which Mrs Forrest Goboli was sitting The car and truck both came to a stop in the ditch on the southeast side of the intersection Neither turned over Mrs Gobeli was born Jan 11 1905 The Gobelis live on a farm 5 miles northwest of Meservey Tells Farmers to Sell Corn After Dec 15 Chicago vice president of the worlds largest grain ex change Saturday told farmers that they should selltheir corn for shipment after Dec 15 because of the east coast shipping tieup J O McClintock executive vice president of the Chicago board of trade issued a statement terming it now impossible for corn to move out of the Chicago market and other midwestern markets to the Atlantic seaboard for export Much of the buying power which came into the Chicago mar ket from eastern order buyers has been almost completely with drawn from the market McClin tocks statement said He said farmers would receive a Eu rope China and elsewhere Still Little Settlement Chance Seen Queen Elizabeths Crew Walk Off Jobs in Sympathy Strike By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Striking east coast longshore men were reported Saturday to have cut their original wage de mands in half but there were scant indications the employers would accept the new figure A source close to the negotia tors said the AFL international longshoremens association has of fered to settle the wage issue for a 25cent hourly increase in pay The association originally de manded 50 cents However the New York shipping association representing the employers fixed a 10cent hourly increase as its utmost concession Into llth Day Meanwhile the strike went into its llth day with every major Atlantic port paralyzed and 218 foreign and Americanflag vessels tied up In Southampton England a fourth of the liner Queen Eliza beths crew walked off their jobs in sympathy with the striking American longshoremen The walkout came an hour and 10 min utes before sailing time and of ficials said it would delay the vessels departure for the United States at least 25 hours Both sides in the dispute will meet again today for further dis cussions in New York Reject Proposal In a Detroit labor dispute Har per hospital Saturday rejected a mayoral proposal that its 13day old strike of AFL service workers be submitted to mediation by the citys labormanagementcitizens committee The union is on strike for recognition Oscar Webber vice president of the hospital said Harper would not deal with the union before any group or committee He repeated
