Christensen murder trial were booked for more testimony Friday on the re lationships of 2 brothers one of them dead and the other not sorry I am not sorry that Julius is dead I am sorry I had to do it Nels 50 told district court yester day as his own chief witness I lost Hazel to my brother he added Julius died of fatal gunshot wounds at a public auction last Sept 4 at Ruthven in a shooting which climaxed a rift between the brothers over Nels divorced wife authorities said FIRST DRAFTEES ARRIVE AT 5 Cerro Gordo county draftees were the first to appear at the Mason City induction center Friday Companion of Wesley Suffers Severe Burns Onamia Rhoads 48 of Britt Iowa was burned to death and his companion George Eenhuis 32 of Wesley Iowa is in the University of Minnesota hospital with burns suffered while trying to save him in a fire at a resort cabin on Mille Lacs Friday morning Sheriff Bruce Milton said the men arrived late Thursday after noon and a high wind kept them off the lake that day The 2 men had planned to go fishing Friday and about 9 oclock Eenhuis was aroused by flames which a strong wind was fan ning Eenhuis ran out of the cabin then ran back in to find Rhoads unconscious and gripping the mattress so tightly that Eenhuis was unable to get him away Otto Schumann owner of the resort where the 2 men were stay ing said the flames spread to an adjacent cabin but the Onamia fire department in time to prevent further damage Rhoads formerly lived in the Kanawha vicinity and recently had been living on a farm north of Britt Eenhuis lives on a farm near Wesley Reports from the univer sity hospital Friday afternoon stated that his condition was fa vorable Missouri Man Dies in Crash West of Corydon Corydon Hocke day 18 of St Joseph Mo was killed early Friday in a truck crash 4 miles west of Corydon Sheriff Nova Kelly said the semitrailer truck hauling beer iackknifed crashed through a bridge and landed in a field Hockeday was pinned in the cab and It listed approxi mately 37000 employes This com pares with about 35000 employes in the previous fiscal year There were about 12750 regular employes in the last fiscal year compared with approximately 11 000 the year before While the turnover was lower last year than the year before the number of regular employes increased last year 574 Persons Listed were 574 persons who re ceived or more This com at a m Friday in a local hospital of a fractured skull and other injuries sustained when he was struck by a city bus early Friday morning Traffic Sgt Quintin Parker said Pappus alighted from a bus Fri government policy Spaak who returned from Paris where he is a United Nations delegate because of the crisis called a full cabinet meeting and the mass resignation resulted The crisis revolved around 2 said Mrs Warfels husband Ran dall told him he was awakened by the smell of smoke and found the clothing in a closet ablaze and the 4 bodies on the floor Chief Fischer quoted Warfel as saying he put friendly terms Few Farmers See Depression Near Des Moines farming magazine reported Friday that few Americans expect a depres sion during the next year A poll conducted by Successful Farming magazine among 6000 000 farmers indicated that 68 per cent of the group looked forward to continued prosperity for the next year Thirteen per cent fore cast a slump and 19 per cent had no opinion However 37 Nation al Grange convention Friday en dorsed a system of flexible gov ernment price supports aimed at preventing future surpluses and shortages of farm products It took this action after defeat ing a proposal to continue indefi nitely the present wartime support program of 90 per cent of parity Working to end its 10day ses sion by nightfall the Grange de clined to take a stand on the con troversial issue of compulsory health insurance It went on record however against a reduction in income taxes during the present period of high employment and income The convention did not say what vote was 43 to 6 with the Russian bloc of nations voting no Roll Call Vote The assembly then began a roll call vote paragraphby paragraph on Russias demand for a one third cut in the armed forces of the 5 great powers within a year and for a ban on the atom bomb Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister A Y Vishinsky told the assembly during earlier debate he would not answer questions in the political committee as to how many soldiers Russia has under arms and would not answer them now Vishinsky said that information would be supplied in due time to the international control organ which was suggested in his resolu tion The soviet resolution already had been rejected by the 58 nation political committee which had ap proved the western supported resolution Dulles Raps Plan Vishinsky said the organ Russia suggested should receive all au thorized data on armaments and Russia would be ready to submit this simultaneously with the other major powers if they agreed to such a plan Before the vote was taken John Foster Dulles on behalf of the United States attacked Russias proposal as almost irresponsible and a cruel deception Brannan Says Meat Prices Going Down St Paul of Ag riculture Charles F Brannan says that meat prices are starting to decline as meat production in creases However he told a news confer ence Thursday meat production may not reach its peak before 1951 He said a but severed in the Le Mars Sheldon and Spirit Lake territory In some areas it was said calls probably could not be made for at least 6 hours Budget Requests Top Last Appropriation 80 Per Cent Des Moines would cost nearly more a year to operate the state government in the next biennium if the askings of the various state departments and agencies are approved Gov Robert D Blue said Friday The governor said the overall askings represent an increase of about 80 per cent over the amounts appropriated by the leg islature for each year of the cur rent biennium He is expected to make some vigorous slashes in the askings before he makes his recommendations to the legisla ture in January The asked includes about to pay the prin cipal and interest on the veterans bonus for the first year It does not include proposals that the state bear 25 per cent of the schools operating costs If all the askings were approved and state income remained the same in the next biennium as it has been in Ohio was killed Thursday when he made a lowaltitude parachute jump from a disabled training plane near Laurel Nebr Offutt air base of ficials announced Friday The plane was disabled over the Elmer here was indicted by a grand jury Friday on charges of federal in come tax evasion He is Cecil A Bottger of Keo kuk who is accused of evading in come taxes in 1942 1943 1944 and 1945 The indictment said that Bottger reported his total income for the 4 years as His income the indictment alleged actually to taled for those years Nearly all of the income listed in the indictment William Sheri dan U Fri day after lashing the great plains states with high winds and drift ing snow which blocked roads disrupted communications and left dozens of communities iso lated While the storm was centered in southeastern Iowa Friday other sections reported freakish weather A pea soup fog rolled in over New York from the Atlantic ocean and a tornado flattened homes and injured 19 persons in Mississippi Colorado Kansas and Nebraska had borne the brunt of the storm which moved into Iowa Friday and were digging out from be neath heavy snow as the skies cleared and high winds subsided U S weather forecasters said the storm would move eastward across the nation hitting the New England states this weekend But they revised earlier warnings of a blizzard Forecasters said the storm will ease up as it moves eastward Mostly Rain It will bring mostly rain and moderately high winds with only light snow they said The storm will center in Detroit by Saturday and in New York state by Sunday forecasters predicted Snow was forecast for Minne sota Wisconsin and upper Mich igan The weather bureau at Chi cago said temperatures will drop 10 to 15 degrees in the storms path The effect of the storm was felt as far east as the Atlantic coast The low pressure area in the mid west caused wetserly winds at New York is bringing an ocean fog into the city and reducing visibil ity to half a block center seemed to be spreading out and slowing some what in its northeasterly move ment One of Series He said the storm was one of the series born in the Pacific that hit Oregon earlier this week It lost some of its force moving through the Rockies but redevel oped on the high plains Badner said Now it looks as though itll move clear across the country and right on into the Atlantic Meanwhile a
