GlobeGazette Editorial Research Bureau WASHINGTON The appeals of both major parties for Negro votes in the presidential cam paign gave clear indication of the power of the colored popula tion at the polls Other recent developments point toa new realization of a different kind of Negro influence the power of the Negro dollar in themar ket place The most dramatic evidence of this was the announcement of four leading variety chain organizations that their luncneon facilities in 112 cities in the South had been inte grated This was a direct result of the students sitin movement of course but also it was a re flection of the power of eco nomic boycott A MORE SUBTLE develop ment is the rise of a sizable magazine circulation for publi cations directed almost solely to Negroes Chief of these is Ebony which first passed the million mark in advertising revenue in 1952 when it was five years old and now boasts a paid circulation of nearly 750 000 Advertising sold in 1959 came to almost million as against slightly over mil lion in the previous yesr Ebony takes space for dis play advertising in metropoli tan newspapers to advise Ma4i son Avenue You can increase your centralcity sales with ef fective customeroriented ad vertising in Ebony magazine The New York Herald Trib une reports It has been found that advertising using Negro models and copy aimed at the Negro consumer is more effec tive forcing advertisers to foot the extra cost of making up special ads for the magazines Indeed Ebony recently had to defend itself against a charge that it used only lightskinned models by pointing out that the magazine does not select the models used by advertisers MAJOR CIGARETTE drug beer whisky soft drink and cosmetics companies appear to feel the extra cost of ads tai lored for the Negro consumer is warranted Ebony which in composition and editorial appeal is a good deal like Life magazine is only one of a dozen or so publica tions apart from the Negro daily press which address themselves to a solely Negro audience Others are Sepia Ac tual Confessions Jet Brown Thrills Tan Jive and Hep Ebony reports on the activi ties of the National Association for Advancement of Colored People and other antisegrega tionist groups but denies any editorial bias in their favor More openly advocative of de segregation is Sepia which is much like Ebony in format and probably that monthlys princi pal competition BOTH MAGAZINES obviously are edited to appeal primarily to women According to Lerone Bennett Jr Ebonys senior edi tor American Negro women control almost twothirds of the total Negro purchasing at least billion of the an nual billion total Where does the consuming power come from Well for one thing the Presidents Commit tee on Government Employ ment Policy reported that Ne groes are getting more good jobs in government And Labor Secretary James P Mitchell re leased a study showing that Ne groes were enjoying steady im provement in their social and economic status The two appear to go handin hand Sepia comments that whereas todays Negros grand father had only prayer to help him the grandson has educa tion to which has been added the power of dollar and he still has prayer On the inside Editorial 4 Society Clear Lake 1011 Comics 12 Maton City News 1415 Latest Markets IS North Iowa NewsU 1701 AFFECTED BY CUTBACK Mrs J G Petway Hohenwald
