report to the multiplied thou sands of people in Iowa Illinois and the Middle West generally who have contributed their truth dollars to Crusade for Freedom for the support of Radio Free Europe These gifts have been made on a strictly voluntary basis There has been no pressure No body has been looking over the shoulder of the donor and say HALL ing out loud or even whispering I think you ought lo give such and such an 11 has been and it will go on being a matter for the individual to decide And that strikes me as being added reason why those who con tribute out of honest conviction and a full heart should welcome a report on what is being done with those truth dollars I speak as one who has been privileged to sit in on and watch the dayto day operations of Radio Free Europe at its two major installa tions MunichGermany and Lis bon Portugal BUT BEFORE t get into my observations and impressions based on that experience I per haps should tell you more about my special interest in the subject It stems from three previous con tacts with people behind the Iron Curtain One was in East Germany one was in Yugoslavia Titos Iron the third only last year was in Hungary and Russia itself Despite a resolution of my own and a promise to my family to taper off on my activities in caus es outside my profession I couldnt find it in my heart to say no when I was asked to head the Crusade for Freedom financial solicitation in my state last year One of the thrills of that commit ment incidentally came from an unbelievable generosity from neighbors in my hometown This mission of inspection par ticipated in by about 50 Crusad ers was largely at the expense of the participants Not one cent of money raised for Radio Free Europe was used Congenial and stimulating companions made it a pleasant 10 days But it could not be described as a vacation in any sense of the word It was much too strenuous for that WITH THIS BACKGROUND laid we are now ready to talk about Radio Free Europe and its task of bringing truth and hope to the 74 million people held as slaves in five satellite nations Poland Czechoslovakia Hungary Romania and Bulgaria The magnitude of the operation came as a surprise lo me close as I have been lo the program for the past year or so In Europe alone there arc in excess of employes The nerve center is in English Gardens a section of Munich where persons fit into Ihe total picture Under a policy adopted some eight years ago when Radio Free Europe came into being at the suggestion of Dwight D Eisen hower then head of our NATO defenses the microphones on the sending end of news commen taries and entertainment have been manned by escapees from the Communist tyranny THAT RULE still prevails Its effective to have a Pole a Czech or a Hungarian in a climate of freedom talking to his former neighbors still living under Com munist tyranny Considering the dimensions of the screening prob lem there are 31 nationalities in all its liltto short of a miracle that order has prevailed where so easily it could have been utter chaos The Crusade for CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 ARCHBISHOP OHARA ARCHBISHOP CUSHING 2 Americans Among 23 New Catholic Cardinals
