Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - November 10, 1952, Mason City, Iowa 14 NOV i UMI CHjr mi City Her Son Gets Fish Hooks at Christmas By ELIZABETH TOOMEY NEW YORK William Gallagher sent her son a package of fish hooks for Christmas Wrapped carefully in wax paper the three fish hooks were slipped in her weekly letter addressed to Cpl James G Gallagher POW Camp 3 Chinese Committee for World Peace Peking China Jimmy used to fish off one of the piers at Coney Island Mrs Gallagher explained He wrote that they could fish in the river over there now but lie needed fish hooks This will be the second Christ mas her 21yearold son has spent in a prisoner of war camp in North Korea T w o years ago the six other Gallagher children anil all the nearby relatives s e n I a 47 pound box complete with a dec orated tree to Korea No Packages But he was taken prisoner that year and we never heard whal happened to the box his mother said They tell us not to send packages now but maybe hell get the fish hooks in the letter In a cardboard box in their five room apartment in Brooklyn Mrs Gallagher has kept the handful of messages that have come from Jimmy including cards he care fully made and colored to send for Mothers Day Easier ami Christ mas The last letter was written in July There Isnt much ncwH he wrote We built a diving board on the river bank and can go fish inw now and we still have enough things to read May Be Censored He never complains but maybe they censor the letters Mrs Gallagher said and then laughed and added Jimmys writing is so terrible I dont see how the cdn sors could make it out Only 1 when he enlisted in the Army Jimmy hadnt decided what career hed pick for after he spent several months ns a prisoner Now he writes that hed like to start a butcher shop with his brotherinlaw his mother said 1 guess they dont get much meat over there so thats where he got the idea Calls Self Lucky She worries between letters which come usually about three months apart but considers her self one of the lucky ones since Jimmy is still alive Ive had people call me and ask me to sign petitions to end the war or exchange the Chinese prisoners for our boys but 1 wouldnt do anything like that the youthful 44yearoldmother said As much as 1 Jove Jimmy I have the other children to think of I want to do what the country thinks is best 1 try to be sensible but sometimes ticnt
