emphasized by Gen Leslie R Groves in his Armistice day address at Roosevelt field house Friday evening at 8 oclock As the head of the Manhattan project which developed the atom bomb in wartime Gen Groves knows the subject both the mili tary and peacetime aspects Yet he leaves his audience optimistic and encouraged about the future His reaction to the news of Rus sias possession of the atom bomb is expected here in his first public discussion of that development Programs Climax Gen Groves address will be the climax of the fullday program sponsored by Clausen Worden post of the American Legion Hampton Three young men were killed and 5 others are in the Lutheran hospital at Hampton with serious injuries suffered in an automobile collision 8 miles west of Hampton on highway 3 at p m Tuesday Instantly killed were George Kibsgaard 18 son of Mr and Mrs Oscar Kibsgaard of Hampton His body was found under the car which he was driv ing Frank Elwood 18 son of Mr and Mrs J R Elwood of Char iton Russell Jensen 19 son of Mr and Mrs Carl Jensen of Hampton died early Wednesday at the hos pital List of Injured The injured were Lawrence Muhlenbruck 18 son of Mrs Clara Muhlenbruck of Hampton Leon Casey 16 and Lloyd Casey 18 sons of Mr and Mrs Everett Casey Hampton Russell Bonjour 22 son of Ray Bonjour Sheffield Merlin Numelin 16 son of Mr and Mrs Walter Numelin of Hampton Because none of the Mrs Adams husband is critically ill in the hospital SAME fU meant trafrio death In past 24 hours CAA Takes On Military Flight Control Task Washington UR The civil aeronautics administration in a sweeping safety move Wednes day assumed fulltime control OVPI the flights of all military planes or regular air routes in the Unitec States The defense department an nounced that the air force and the navy have ceded to the CAA the power to prescribe the altitude radio frequencies and other fligh terms of military craft under al weather conditons Previously the CAA has con trolled military flying between cities only in adverse weather The defense department said the change was made with a view to achieving maximum flying safe ty over the entire United States Details of the new regulations will be announced shortly CAAs assumption of control over military flights came as 1 The civil aeronautics board prepared to open hearings on the collision here last week between a P38 fighter plane and an East ern Air Lines DC4 All 55 persons aboard the airliner were killed It was the worst disaster in civil avi ation history 2 Authorities were investigat ing the report of an Eastern Air Lines pilot that this plane bound from Boston to Atlanta with 54 sersons aboard narrowly averted a collision with an air force B25 ibout 8 miles south of Washington Tuesday The B25 pilot was prac icing instrument flying at the ime DIES IN TRACTOR MISHAP Brandon Carl Maas 48 vas fatally injured late Tues day in a tractor accident at his arm near here Maas had been n the fields plowing during the day When he failed to return to he house Ihc family investigated nitl found him entangled in the Iactor straight stretch of highway and is believed to have been headon Kibsgaard was driving one car and Muhlenbruck the other Both cars were almost totally demolished but neither one turned over Kibsgaard and Elwood were in one car and the other 6 in the car driven by Muhlenbruck ac cording to early investigation by officers One of the cars was pavement and the other off the pavement at the north Kibsgaards body was under neath the car The 6 injured young men were taken lo the hospital where Jen sen died Wednesday morning Little Mouse Seen os Cause of Fire Decorah A little mouse locked in a steel cabinet in the school house in District No 8 Madison township apparently chewed some matches endangering the building Tuesday morning When Miss B e r ni c e Feltis opened the school she found the room filled with smoke The De corah fire department was called to extinguish the fire and the cause was determined The con tents of the cabinet consisting of phonograph and school records was destroyed Only on Monday Miss Feltis had told the pupils about fire pro tection and said that not even a hand grenade had been provided for the school Had the fire oc curred on a day when the school was not open the building would probably have been destroyed as the wall back of the cabinet was Shooting of Brother 8 Northwood LeRoy Johnson 12 has admitted that he was the one who shot his brother Duane 8 while the 2 were playing Sunday afternoon in the yard of their farm home near Kensett Sheriff Ancel Conner and Highway Patrolman R W Hahn who have been in vestigating the shooting reported Wednesday The authorities said the shooting was accidental LeRoy stated that the 2 had de cided upon a story which had at first been given authorities that Duane was shot by someone in a late model light blue Hudson or Nash sedan which stopped on the graveled road in front of the place but some distance from where the 2 were playing the officials said The 12year old stated the 2 made up the story because they were afraid to tell their parents Mr and Mrs Maynard Johnson what happened the sheriff said he was told and after they had agreed upon it LeRoy went to a nearby farm where the parents were to summon aid LeRoy first told the true story of the incident to his father Hahn said late Tuesday and Duane later admitted the original story was wrong Monday 4 men who had been shooting with rifles within J miles of the place had been ques tioned in connection with the boys shooting The that would insure effective in ternational control of the atom U S Steel Talks Due on Thursday Strike Finished Pending Further Contract Efforts By UNITED PRESS John L Lewis suddenly called off the coal strike Wednesday and setllement of the steel workers walkout against the nations No 1 steel producers U S Steel ap peared probable within the next few days The labor situation clouded for 52 days by the coal walkout and for 40 days by the steel walkout brightened considerably But in coal there was a limit on the time that peace might be effective Lewis and his policy committee ordered 380000 United Mine Workers idle in bituminous mines east of the Mississippi to return to their jobs until midnight Nov 30 under conditions of a contract which expired July 1 The order did not say whether the miners will work 3 days or 5 but it was believed they would work the 3 day schedule they were on when the walkout began Sept 19 5Day Week UMW District 5 offices at Pitts burg said however that its men
