public test Tuesday it the hands of an estimated 5500000 New Yorkers voting on the election of a United States senator The bitter contest between Sen ator John Foster Dulles repub lican and former democratic Governor Herbert H Lehman far overshadowed a number of other contests and issues in scattered elections across the nation The 2 men both prominent public figures campaigned hard to fill out the unexpired term of former Senator Robert F Wag ner DN a new deal stal wart who resigned because of ill health last July Gov Thomas E Dewey appointed Dulles to serve until the election Term to Expire Wagners term will expire in January 1951 Ordinarily a race for such a short term would ex cite little public interest But the stature of the 2 candidates plus their clearcut definition of is Bottom of Elevator Shaft Jacob Nagel 60 1022 Monroe N W engineer at the postoffice in Mason City was reported in satis factory condition at Park hospital Tuesday where he was suffering from severe head and chest in juries He was taken to the hos pital from the elevator pit at the postoffice in midafternoon Mon day but no one was able to ex plain how he was injured Nagel and Joe Lemker the elevator operator were working in the pit giving the machinery its usual maintenance according to Assistant Postmaster H J Stein berg When the 2 workers heard someone buzz for the elevator Nagel told Lemker to operate the elevator The elevator is constructed with a bumper in the pit so that it is possible to work under it Stein berg explained Lemker said he thought Nagel was working on a ladder at the time When the elevator reached the 2nd floor Lemker thought he heard a crash in the pit and went immediately to investigate He and a navy recruiting officer with him found Nagel lying on the floor of the pit his face and head bleeding They said he crawled out of the pit however with their assistance Nagel was in great pain while he lay on the postoffice floor for the ambulance Stein berg said and was unable to tell anyone what had happened Continue Express Rate for Papers DCS Moines Iowa commerce commission Tues day ordered the present express rates on newspapers of 2 of a cent a pound continued until March 12 1950 A new rate of 12 cents a pound was scheduled to go into effect Nov 13 for newspapers traveling in intrastate commerce The 12 cent rate is in effect for news papers moving in interstate com merce The commission ordered the tnspension of the effective date of the increase following complaints from most major newspapers in the state and ordered that a hear ing be set scores o locals in 12 Il linois Indiana Iowa Massachu setts Minnesota Missouri New Jersey New York Ohio Penn sylvania and West Virginia It showed that 107482 UE mem bers have voted to secede from the parent union or have otherwise indicated strongly they intend to do so m the less than a week since the UE was expelled by the na tional CIO for left wingism Most of those who have voted for secession have also announced their intention of going into the CIO A few have made no state ment of their intent One small local joined the ClOUnited Auto Workers A total of 68608 UE members in other locals have voted to stick by the parent organization or have announced that is their intention Half and Half This total of 176090 who have said what they intend to do com pares with a total UE membership estimated at 400000 to 450000 Previous tests of strength in the locals and of the national conven tion floor indicate that about half the membership is left wing half right wing The survey does not include 25 Chicago locals 24 of which voted to stay with the NE as member ship figures of this group are not yet available Developments have followed thick and fast since the national CIO last week at its Cleveland convention kicked the UE out for showing left wing tendencies An nouncement of the new CIO union to attract right wingers who wanted out of the UE followed the expulsion by minutes 4 Washington John G rommelin whose release of con fidential navy correspondence ouched off the congressional in estigation of military policy got aff Tuesday with only a sharp Vep He was restored to active luty Admiral Forrest P Sherman the new naval chief of operations disposed of Crommelins case by writing him a letter of reprimand The letter said Crommelin had vi olated navy regulations New agreements were reached in the steel strike Tuesday and developments in the soft coal walkout indicated that UMW Chief John L Lewis might be attempting to reach settlements with some individual Illinois or Indiana coal operators In the steel strike agreements were announced between the CIO Steelworkers union and Republic Steel and Jones Laughlin bringing closer the end of the 39 dayold strike However 345 000 steel workers still were idle The new steel settlements brought the companies ranking 2 3 and 4 in national steel produc tion back into the USW Bethlehem Republic and Jones sea
