history killed 6 and injured 65 when a street car and bus collided head on early Saturday morning 6 Killed as Street Car Bus Collide Toronto persons were killed and 50 others were injured Saturday when a bus collided headon with a streetcar Three persons were killed m itantly and 3 others died enroute to the hospital The injured were taken to St Josephs hospital in Toronto The accident occurred on the outskirts of the city when the Hamiltonbound bus swerved to avoid a pedestrian The pedestrian was listed as one of the victims Tom Clerk motorman on the streetcar was among the injured He said many of those injured on the streetcar suffered broken legs Claims He Was Phantom Killer Police Study Suicide Note Left by Youth Fayetteville Ark moody college freshman claimed in sui cide notes to have been the phan tom killer who terrorized his home town but police Saturday launched mn investigation with doubt H B Tennison 17 of Texar kana Ark was found dead in his rooming house here where he attended the University of Ar kansas In the room with his body apparently used found notes telling that he killed himself because he was the Texar kana phantom Five persons were mysteriously killed in the border city in the spring of 1946 and Tennisons notes said he was responsible for 3 of the slayings He listed the victims as Betty Jo Booker 15 Paul Martin 17 and Virgil Starks 36 Sheriffs who investigated the cases however doubted that he was the killer or that the deaths of Miss Booker and Martin slain on a lonely road were connected with that of Starks The latter was shot by rifle fire in his farm home 3 weeks after the BookerMartin shooting The confession was found on paper rolled and hidden in a cas ing of a ballpoint fountain pen Officers found it through another note in a folder The 6 foot tall youth who weighed only 130 pounds was said by friends to have an in feriority complex which investi gators thought may have been aggravated by his going away from home to college Urging Stassen to Rebuild GOP on More Liberal Lines Washington UR Influential republicans are urging Harold E Stassen to rebuild the GOP along more liberal lines with an eye on the 1952 presidential race it was learned Saturday Stassen who was defeated for the partys nomination in June by Gov Thomas E Dewey has been swamped with letters telegrams and telephone calls at the Univer sity of Pennsylvania where he is now president Many of the com munications are from republican bigwigs willing to pledge their support if he will take on the job of reconstruction No Comment Stassen himself refused to com ment immediately on these devel opments Im not statement ready to make any he told the United Press by telephone I think the situation calls for some reflection A republican senator known for his liberal leanings said he be lieves it is up to Stassen to re form the party which was ousted from control of congress in Tues days election upset This senator said he himself is at work now on concrete proposals for the future of the republican party Preaches Liberalism A prominent former governor who also has been preaching the need for more liberalism in the republican ranks agreed that Stassen is the man to do the job He said he expects to talk with Stassen personally however be fore launching any campaign on his behalf Dewey has announced he will not be a candidate for the nom 62 43 28 Refuse Rail Rate Boost Iowa Ruling Does Not Agree With ICCs Des Moines Iowa com merce commission Saturday de clined to grant the railroads a 5 per cent increase on freight car ried within the borders of this state In refusing to grant the 5 per cent boost the Iowa commission took exception to action taken by the interstate commence commis sion The ICC in a recent freight rate order had granted interstate in creases of 20 per cent in all west ern trunk line territory except zone 1 which is made up of Iowa southern Minnesota and northern Missouri In zone 1 the ICC specified a 25 per cent increase The Iowa commission previously had granted railroads a 20 per cent increase on intrastatc traffic on a tem porary basis The railroads then sought the extra 5 per cent to bring Iowas
