to give Indias hardpressed Himalayan army better weapons to use against invaders from Red China The first of 10 US Air Force C135 jet transports lifted off the runway at the big RheinMain air base near Frankfurt and flew off into heavily overcast skies It was due in Calcutta Siurday A roundtheclock airlift was planned and relief crews were flown to Calcutta to take the big planes back to Germany for re loading The airlift is bringing fastfiring light infantry weapons including mountain artillery sorely needed to counter the Communists su perior firepower US Ambassador John Kenneth gains in the Nov 6 ballot ing Connecticut will elect a Negro to statewide office for the firs time Each ma jor party nomi BACKGROUND nated a Negro for sfate treas urer California will have its first Negro con gressman i n another all Negro contest New York and Massachusetts have Negroes running for state wide York for the first time Negroes many of them Incum bents are running for local or district offices such as assembly men in numerous states The Deep South state of Georgia is slated to have a Negro in its legislature for the first time in more than a half century Leroy Johnson an Atlanta Ne gro attorney defeated three white candidates for the Democratic nomination to the state Senate in a newly delineated district He will run in the general election against T M Alexander a Ne gro who was unopposed in the Republican primary In Connecticut Gerald A Lamb a dontal technician is running for state treasurer on the Democrat ic ticket and William D Graham a lawyer on the Republican They were the first Negroes nominates for statewide office in Connecti cut will average four to six de grees below normal over Iowa through next Wedn e s da y Normal highs 50 to 55 degrees
