Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - May 31, 1929, Mason City, Iowa i I k i EIGHT G A R VETERANS ARE IN PARADE Three Old Soldiers Follow Band in Procession at Nora Springs NORA SPRINGS May band led by C F Weaverof Mason City led the Memorial day procear slon at the flrfgstaff on South Main street and marched to theMethod ist church at 2 oclock pm Following the band we rethree of the five remaining Civil war vet erans J Sherman 92 Bit Hutchin sbn 91 and J E Green 85 next came the American Legion boys of Nora Springs and Rudd then the Auxiliary and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and citizens who filled the church to capacity America the Beautiful was sung by the audience and the ritual prayer was followed by a prayer by the Rev H A Crumb Nine Boy Scouts then sang Hess Gives Address The address of the afternoon was by the Rev G A Hess of Charles City War was the only means men used to know how to to settle differences he said Eight wars ourccmntry has fought and won but at great sacrifice of life not only on field of battle but from homesickness of the soldier boys and lack of sanitation We have come to the time when war is to be outlawed Forty coun tries have signed the Kellogg peace pact We honor and are loyal to our soldier dead but let us have hope and have faith that war shall be no more Has Charge The American Legion had charge of the services and Harry Benedict as commander presided The procession was reformed and Marched to Park cemetery where the graves were decorated by Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and where short addresses were given by the Rev Mr Crumb and by Robert Lodge American Legion command er A mixed quartet from Rudd sang two selections After three volleys fired by the firing squad Taps was heard in the distance The band played the Star Others appearing on the program were the Rev J A M Hinderlie of the Imraanuel Lutheran church who gave the invocation the Rev E Carnell Wilson ofthe Congregation al offered prayer for the sailor dead the Rev Dr M D Bush of the First Methodist church who spoke for the Unknown Soldier the Rev M S Hansen of the Calvary Baptist church who offered prayer at Oakwood cemetery and the Rev Ole Rohrstaff of the Norwegian Methodist church who offered pray er at Madison cemetery Ralph Robinson spoke Lincolns Gettysburg address and Mariorie Kelly gave In Flanders Field Spanish Veteran Marshal H F Thompson Spanish Am encan war veteran was marshal of the day and Supt C M Ross World war veteran was master of cere monies The Forest City band and male chorus furnished the music The Legion Auxiliary had charge of decoration of the graves Mrs Carrie O Isaacs 84 held the distinction of being both a Civil war widow and gold star mother She also heard her grandson deliver the Gettysburgaddress on his fifteenth birthday Only three members of G A R Hayden Post No 151 organized March 8 1883 were present An drew Brones Auolphus Jones and Luther C Green Recital First Event of Commencement on Upper Iowa Program FAYETTE May 31 The openingevent on theextended pro gram of commencement week activ ities at Upper Iowa university the senior voice recital was set today Tomorrow the graduation of the school of music will be held while on Sunday Dr J Richmond Morgan will deliver the baccalaureate ser mon before the 31 students to be granted diplomas The graduation of the school of speech and the meeting of the La des Professional associations are set for Monday with the annual alumni day to be held on Tuesday The tlasses of 1019 and 1924 will hold special reunions as a feature of the alumni program Dr John Andrew Holmes will de liver the commencement address on Wednesday The senior class this year numbers seven fewer students than did the one graduated In 1928 Allison Band to Give Concert
