authorities have ruled out arson negligence and defective wiring as possible causes of a fire late Saturday which gutted the Laing Hotel and claimed four lives Deputy State Fire Marshal Don Hutchinson Storm Lake joined Fire Chief Ira Kohl and Kossuth County Sheriff Ralph Lind horst in a probe to determine the cause of the fire Hutchinson said the blaze apparently started near a door in a storage room under a stairway behind the first floor lobby The storage room contained mops brooms and cases of soft some of which exploded from the intense heat generated by the blaze The fire spread rapidly pVERY NOW AND THEN you hear somebody use the term agonizing appraisal It turns out to be a reference to some person or some organiza tion that is not only willing to face unpleasant facts but in sistent on knowing the truth no matter how painful or em barrassing And this leads me to a report on the national Red Cross con vention held recently in Kansas City Mo It was presided over by Roland Harriman now be ginning his llth year as top official and Gen Alfred Gruen ther as president and execu tive chief of the organization who had an impressively import ant role in the fourday meeting This organization dedicated to the task of alleviating distress wherever it occurs in our world took a hard dispassionate look at itself and its program an agonizing reappraisal if you please The convention opened with a dramatic prologue The Con stant Image with Clara Bar tons role played by Mrs H Roe Bartle wife of Kansas Citys giant mayor whose wel coming remarks were one of the highlights of the meeting The pageant written and pro duced by the host chapter set a tone of dignity and inspira tion for the work sessions to follow From the Good Samari tan parable answering the question Who
